Family Law Managing Attorney
Family Law Managing Attorney
Statewide Legal Services of Connecticut (SLS) seeks a Managing Attorney who is excited by the idea of empowering low-income people with civil legal needs. We are looking for someone with leadership aspirations and who possesses the enthusiasm to envision themselves in a long-term career in non-profit legal services advocacy and management. SLS is a dynamic remote-services legal aid helpline, providing high quality legal counseling, advice, referrals and self-help opportunities. As a member of the Connecticut Network for Legal Aid, we provide the resources and tools to help our clients understand and resolve life-impacting cases such as evictions, domestic violence, consumer debt-defense and public benefit denials and appeals. Our over-all services include outreach, community education, web-based learning tools, and collaborations with social service and legal services providers in all areas of the state. In the coming months we will be looking to place a greater emphasis on our strong commitment to race equity and to better understand the effects of climate change on our low-income clients, alongside our core values and mission. SLS is an Equal Opportunity employer. We encourage applicants from all backgrounds, ages, ethnicities and gender-identities/neutral to apply.
Responsibilities and Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have significant experience in family law and litigation in Connecticut, and have worked with people of low-income or marginalized and diverse populations. The Managing Attorney (“MA”) will be responsible for supervising the Family Law Unit at SLS and reviewing the daily hotline advocacy of the attorneys and paralegals in the unit. The MA will hold regularly-scheduled unit meetings to discuss relevant issues within the unit, updates to protocols, etc. The MA will also attend statewide meetings to keep abreast of trends or changes in the law, among other job duties. The MA of the Family Law Unit works in conjunction with the other Managing Attorney of SLS’ substantive law units (Housing, Public Benefits, Pro Bono) and participates in SLS Management team meetings to focus on operations and efficiencies of our program. In addition, the MA will be expected, at times, to participate in grant-related projects that require outreach and community legal education when the opportunity presents. Attorneys at SLS are encouraged to take a thoughtful and participatory approach to program development in areas of priority setting, strategic planning, and outreach and outcome measurements. Because of our fast-paced environment, the ideal candidate will already have a basic proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, digital case management or similar systems. SLS moved from an office-based program to remote work during the pandemic. We will continue to offer our services to clients primarily through remote work. SLS provides staff with appropriate equipment and IT services to allow connection to the SLS hotline, case management system, and to all our networked capacities. The candidate must have and maintain sufficient bandwidth. Meetings and trainings for staff are conducted both in person and remotely, as are SLS projects and outreach events. The candidate should be domiciled in Connecticut, have a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school, and possess an active law license in Connecticut. Spanish oral and literacy proficiency is a plus, but is not required. Our organization is built on a foundation of innovation, collaboration, and fostering a healthy work-life balance. Along with an extremely generous benefits package including health, dental, disability, paid leave, and 401(k) with employer contribution, SLS offers advocates the ability to work from home! Salary : $70,000 - $90,000 DOE
