External Relations Officer

For over 50 years, Legal Aid Chicago has provided free civil legal assistance to people living in poverty in metropolitan Chicago. Each year, our attorneys, volunteers, and staff help resolve civil legal problems, including domestic violence, consumer fraud, and unfair evictions. Legal Aid Chicago was founded on the philosophy that all individuals are entitled to quality civil legal representation, regardless of their income. Position: The External Relations Department is responsible for all fundraising, marketing and communications activities at Legal Aid Chicago. The External Relations Officer will report to a supervisor within External Relations. This position will work with the External Relations staff to assist with fundraising initiatives, cultivate and retain individual donors, major gifts, law firm and corporate sponsorship, and all other fundraising goals.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Work with the supervisor and others within External Relations to create all direct mail campaigns, processes and materials;
  • Develop realistic timelines and schedule that deliver, with regularity, newsletters and direct mail campaigns;
  • Help coordinate day to day execution and oversight to ensure campaign milestones are met and deployment dates are achieved;
  • Work with printer, mail house, and other vendors to price services, obtain contracts, and coordinate pickup and drop off of materials;
  • Work collaboratively on projects across the organization to advance fundraising goals;
  • Maintain donor records and data. Ensure their completeness, accuracy, and usefulness, for both developing and analyzing strategy;
  • Process contributions and donations and maintain the development database. Run reports as needed;
  • Develop and fulfill donor sponsorship opportunities, draft donor acknowledgement letters and mailings and ensure they are sent in a timely manner;
  • Conceptualize and implement donor programs and assist with donor cultivation events;
  • Manage registrations and ticket purchases for fundraising and cultivation events to ensure an accurate list of all attendees. Includes following up with sponsors for their guest lists;
  • Assist the supervisor to implement major donor moves management;
  • Help coordinate all individual appeal campaigns and monitor giving initiatives and donor engagement, including social media;
  • Assist with/provide support to the Board and Ambassadors Board for fundraising and engagement initiatives; and
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements: 
  • Applicant must have a college degree. 
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in fundraising preferred.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills; sensitive to donor intentions. 
  • Adaptive and flexible; high energy; passionate; capable of learning quickly; excellent listener; positive and outgoing personality with a professional touch.
  • Able to represent Legal Aid Chicago in a highly professional manner.
  • Proficiency working with grant management systems and portals.
  • Excellent computer skills, especially using Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Donor database experience - Raisers Edge preferred.
  • Must be able to multi-task.
