Position: Executive Director, City Bar Justice Center
Reports To: Executive Director, New York City Bar Association
The City Bar Justice Center (CJBC) is the 501(c)(3) affiliate of the New York City Bar Association (City Bar), one of the nation’s largest bar associations. CBJC partners with New York City’s leading law firms and corporate legal departments and with City Bar committees to advocate for low-income New Yorkers with civil legal problems, including by recruiting, training and matching volunteer attorneys to provide advice and representation and by issuing reports and recommendations. CBJC’s Legal Hotline, the largest operation of its kind in New York, provides referrals and brief advice to 1,000 people per month. The CBJC’s work is organized into a dozen projects designed to address areas of unmet civil legal need in a variety of fields including immigration, homelessness, veterans, LGBTQ, bankruptcy, small businesses, elder law and estate planning. CBJC, conveniently located in a historic building at 42 West 44th Street in midtown Manhattan, is working remotely during the pandemic.
The Executive Director leads a staff of approximately 20 attorneys at different levels of experience and other staff including 8 non-attorney project coordinators. The Executive Director is a thought leader in shaping discussions within the legal and non-profit communities around improving access to justice.
Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:
• Provide strategic vision and leadership for CBJC and its programs;
• Ensure the quality of legal services provided to 26,000 clients annually;
• Strengthen and build relationships with stakeholders including client communities and pro bono law firms and corporate legal departments;
• Collaborate with City Bar departments and committees, the City Bar Fund Board and the other programs of the City Bar Fund (Office for Diversity & Inclusion, Vance Center for International Justice and Lawyer Assistance Program);
• Create budgets and manage financial health of organization;
• Oversee government and foundation grants and lead fundraising efforts (historically at least an additional $2 million annually);
• Lead diverse team of experienced lawyers and administrative staff and provide substantive supervision;
• Oversee communications for CBJC and engage in speaking and writing about pro bono legal services and serving the legal needs of low-income people.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
The successful candidate will be an attorney who is an accomplished and dynamic leader, advocate, and manager committed to expanding legal services through pro bono and direct representation and who is passionate about social justice and racial equity.
Professional Experience includes:
• Significant senior non-profit or legal-related leadership;
• Management, fundraising, litigation and operational experience;
• Enthusiasm for fundraising and governmental relations;
• Deep understanding of New York City’s legal community, bar associations, and law firm and corporate legal departments and their capacity to provide pro bono legal services;
• Engagement with and support for public interest law organizations in New York City and the populations they serve;
• At least ten years of legal experience including prior experience working as a public interest and/or pro bono attorney;
• Technology-forward orientation to all aspects of legal practice, operations and fundraising.
• Editing and writing, including engagement on social media.
