Employment Rights Attorney

Description: 

We are looking for an attorney with the desire and ability to litigate impact cases; work in partnership with client communities and coalitions; and develop and advocate for policies to promote and expand the rights of Maryland’s most vulnerable workers. The ideal candidate is a bilingual attorney with experience or understanding of the structural underpinnings of wage theft, its relationship to racism and immigration status, and a passion for using the law to promote lasting social change. The attorney will report to the lead attorney of the Workplace Justice Project.

Essential job responsibilities include:

✓ Providing know-your-rights trainings in Spanish and English;

✓ Analyzing employment-related intakes for case selection and team review;

✓ Handling all aspects of litigation as lead or co-counsel (including private counsel);

✓ Thorough and timely case and file management;

✓ Being an active and thoughtful participant in coalitions;

✓ Providing legal expertise, research, drafting legislation, and/or developing other strategies as selected by partner coalitions or community partners;

✓ Lobbying and testifying in the Maryland General Assembly and other legislative bodies;

✓ Participating thoughtfully in team evaluations and the development of the team workplan.

Compensation and terms of employment: This is a full-time, exempt, professional position. The attorney may be called upon to work hours in excess of 40 hours in a workweek, including the potential for evening and weekend work. This position requires local travel on at least a weekly basis, and the attorney must have access to reliable transportation. The salary range for an attorney with 3-7 years of experience is $65,000 to $75,000. Requirements: 

The following qualifications are valued for this position. Applicants should also identify other skills and experiences that may benefit the PJC.

▪ Maryland bar admission or admission to another state bar and willingness to take the Maryland bar.

▪ At least three years of legal experience.

▪ Ability to speak, comprehend, and write Spanish and English fluently.

▪ Passion for social justice and commitment to the mission of the Public Justice Center.

▪ Understanding the principles of race equity analysis and the intersection of racism and poverty and applying them to the PJC’s organizational life and to our work.

▪ Experience with low-income and other oppressed communities and people.
