NMLA seeks Domestic Violence Helpline Staff Attorney

 

New Mexico Legal Aid (NMLA) has an opening for an attorney to staff NMLA’s Domestic Violence Helpline. The NMLA Domestic Violence Helpline is funded by the New Mexico Crime Victims Reparation Commission and provides statewide services to victims of domestic violence. The Domestic Violence Helpline Attorney provides legal assistance to clients over the phone who have been experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.  The attorney will provide assistance with Orders of Protection, divorce, custody, and other related issues affecting the personal safety and economic security of victims. The attorney also will be a key member of NMLA’s statewide family law practice group.

 

Duties of the domestic Violence Helpline Attorney include taking calls from survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking, completing formal intakes and providing legal advice in accordance with the grant, program or project directives.  The attorney will make referrals for further assistance, including legal representation to NMLA offices and other service providers, agencies and organizations. The successful applicant should be a self-starter, require limited supervision; and possess excellent writing and communication skills and be committed to serving the needs of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking survivors.

 

Requirements: 

Requirements: Three years’ experience representing victims of domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking is highly preferred. Must be licensed in New Mexico, or eligible for licensing by reciprocity, limited legal aid providers licensing. Must be able to effectively use computer technology and remote communications systems, including shared on-line workspaces and web meeting and videoconferencing software, to effectively collaborate with staff located in multiple offices. Candidates also must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks, manage a high caseload and build collaborative relationships within the staff and the community. Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
