Disability Law Attorney

Vermont Legal Aid is re-opening the search for a full-time Disability Law Attorney to work in the southern part of the state. The position is remote, until VLA changes its remote work policy this summer, after which it will be based out of either our Rutland or Springfield Offices.

Responsibilities include individual and systems advocacy in a variety of forums on behalf of persons with disabilities.  Case work is primarily in the area of disability-based discrimination, special education, government benefit programs, guardianship, and other areas concerning individual rights.

Starting salary is $57,500+, with additional salary credit given for relevant prior work experience. Four weeks paid vacation and retirement, as well as excellent health benefits. Attorney applicants must be licensed to practice law in Vermont or eligible for admission by waiver.  In-state travel in a personal vehicle required.

Requirements: 

Qualifications

• Licensed to practice law by the State of Vermont.
• Commitment to social justice and disability rights.
• Experience and/or commitment to working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injury, and other disabilities.
• Working knowledge of anti-discrimination laws for people with disabilities, special education law, and Medicaid law preferred though not required.
• Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
• Commitment to working in a collaborative, team-based setting.
• Ability and willingness to make decisions and solve problems creatively under tight deadlines.
• High level of initiative and ability to plan.
• Demonstrable organizational skills in managing complex workload.
