Director of Pro Bono

Description: 

Legal Aid Society of Orange County (LASOC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was founded in 1958 for the purpose of providing civil legal services to low income individuals and seniors. It has two offices in Orange County and two offices in Southeast Los Angeles County, where it is known as Community Legal Services (CLS). LASOC-CLS seeks an energetic, motivated, personable and effective staff attorney to be based in LASOC’s Santa Ana office, with work responsibilities in all service regions.  Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Director of Pro Bono will develop, market and oversee a wide range of volunteer involvement projects and partnership opportunities. The goals are to:
1) generate additional pro bono legal resources to augment LASOC’s advocacy efforts;
2) reinforce LASOC’s support base in the private bar by facilitating outside involvement in our mission;
3) strengthen and innovate LASOC’s Legal Entrepreneur Assistance Program (LEAP); and
4) position LASOC‐CLS as an integral part of a “community of justice” of legal services providers, social service agencies, community‐based organizations, educators, judges, and individuals working together to achieve equal justice.

Requirements: 
Minimum Qualifications

●       Minimum of six (6) years of experience in the practie of law. Familiarity wtih the Orange and Los Angeles Legal Communities a plus;

●       Knowledge of, and interest in, the legal issues affecting low‐income individuals and communities, can be demonstrated through prior legal services experience or volunteering as pro bono counsel;

●        Excellent analytical, communication and presentation skills;

●        Ability to advocate persuasively for the program’s mission;

●        Must be able to work independently and as part of a team, as well as build a strong PAI team;

●        Energetic self‐starter who can take initiative;

●        Creativity and ability to maximize the use of existing resources;

●        Proficiency in Legal Server, Form Builder, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, etc. and other software programs.
 

Duties and Responsibilities:

●        Develop pro bono programs for LASOC‐CLS’s Orange and Los Angeles County offices, including production of policies and procedures manual and a training regimen;

●        Conceptualize, coordinate and promote a comprehensive Private Attorney Involvement (“PAI”) plan that both nurtures existing and develops new relationships;

●        Work with program advocates and management to research and analyze complex poverty law matters and cutting‐edge issues and design innovative projects that effectively address them;

●        Actively recruit and place volunteer attorneys, law students and others to staff legal clinics, take individual cases for representation, co‐counsel on litigation, and provide supervision as needed;

●        Assess, oversee and develop innovative programs for LASOC’s Legal Entrepreneur Assistance Program (LEAP);

●        Serve as liaison with government, bar, judiciary, law schools, and community‐based organizations in local, statewide and national collaborative efforts to increase access to justice;

●        Assist in developing marketing and communication plans to draw in pro bono interest to legal services work;

●        Supervise a Pro Bono Coordinator and oversee a team of existing legal staff in our other offices that will serve as “liaison” to the pro bon program;

●        Work closely with Los Angeles and Orange County Bar Associations;

●        Devise and oversee systems for placing and monitoring pro bono cases, tracking outcomes, and volunteer timekeeping;

●        Develop systems and process with tech staff to integrate pro bono work into the program;

●        Maintain regular contact with PAI attorneys and their referred clients to ensure that the case is moving forward and also to obtain necessary information at the case’s completion;

●        Address issues that may arise from pro bono work between pro bono counsel or client, and provide necessary assistance in addressing matters;

●        Ensure LASOC’s compliance with LSC regulations regarding PAI and assist with reporting duties;

●        Provide logistical support to substantive units conducting volunteer trainings;

●        Develop ideas for volunteer recognition and appreciation; and

●        Other duties as determined by senior management.
