Director of Litigation & Policy, Health Consumer Center

Description: 

NLSLA is seeking a Director of Litigation & Policy for its Pacoima office. The Director of Litigation and Policy provides overall leadership and direction to the legal staff, with the support of the full senior team and in support of the Supervising attorneys, to ensure high quality advocacy, strategically strong decision-making, grant compliance, community leadership, professional development both substantively and procedurally. Execute the NLSLA Mission and Vision, and provide leadership for execution at all levels of legal staff. In collaboration with the Senior Team, determine and implement NLSLA’s litigation and policy vision and priorities. Manage and develop relationships with external stakeholders and partners ranging from civil rights groups, law firms, legal services programs, government agencies, community organizations, key funders, and donors to secure partnerships, grants, and other opportunities and support. Create, launch, and implement major grants and projects, overseeing all health matters. Formulate strategy on impact litigation and policy. Coordinate directly with the CFO to ensure adherence to budgeting on grants and projects. Support supervising attorneys in recruiting and training of attorneys and paralegals. Engage in all management responsibilities and activities of the Senior Team and Leadership Team. This position reports to the Executive Director and serves as part of the senior management team. Ensure competent staffing coverage of all impact cases, policy projects and other substantial initiatives.

Requirements: 

Minimum ten years of impact litigation and policy experience, ideally with background in addressing social justice issues. Collaborative management style and demonstrated commitment to the value teams. Passionate commitment to social justice and to NLSLA’s goals and missions. Experience with fee generation in civil rights cases and development of innovative funding sources for litigation. Successful track record forging alliances and coalitions and moving people to take collective action. Effective interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to write and speak persuasively to diverse audiences, including general public, media, lawyers, advocates, funders, donors, and opinion leaders; experience working with community based organizations. J.D. is required and California Bar passage in good standing. Bilingual capacity strongly preferred.
