The Public Justice Center (PJC) in Baltimore is seeking a Director of Development to manage fundraising and communications to support and grow a dynamic and collaborative legal advocacy organization.

The Public Justice Center’s mission is to pursue systemic change to build a just society. Founded in Maryland in 1985, the PJC uses legal advocacy tools to pursue social justice, economic and racial equity, and fundamental human rights for people who are struggling to provide for their basic needs. The PJC is a civil legal aid office that provides advice and representation to low-income clients, advocates before legislatures and government agencies, and collaborates with community and advocacy organizations. www.publicjustice.org.

Brief Job Description:
The Director of Development leads the fundraising and communications efforts required to sustain and grow the Public Justice Center. The Director of Development will lead the planning and implementation of a variety of fundraising initiatives, including an annual campaign, foundation grants, law firm campaign, low- and major donor cultivation, and events. The

Director of Development will develop and maintain a communications program, including e-news, social media, annual reports and other materials, the PJC website, and ongoing public/media relations.

The position reports to the Executive Director and supervises the Development Team. The Development Team currently raises more than $2 million per year to support this 20+ staff organization. In addition to the Director of Development, the Development Team currently includes a full-time Development Manager, a half-time Development Associate, and about half the time of the Executive Director. The Director of Development is also the primary person directing and supporting the involvement of the Board of Directors, program staff, and support groups such as the Lawyers’ Alliance and Leadership Council in fundraising and communications.

 

Requirements: 

The following qualifications are valued for this position. Applicants should also identify other skills and experiences that may benefit the PJC.

• Passion for social justice and commitment to the mission of the Public Justice Center.
• At least 5-7 years of experience as a Director of Development or senior fundraiser.
• Ability to manage a small shop with diverse revenue sources and fundraising strategies.
• Demonstrated expertise in cultivating and soliciting major donors and growing the donor base.
• Experience in communications.
• Understanding of and ability to apply the principles of race equity analysis and the intersection of racism and poverty to the PJC’s organizational life and to our work.
