Appalachian Citizens’ Law Center (ACLC) is seeking an experienced Development Director for immediate hire.

About ACLC:  

ACLC is a nonprofit law firm that fights for justice in the Appalachian coalfields by representing citizens and communities who have been affected by present and past abuses of the mining industry. We offer free legal services, strategic litigation, policy work, and research in the areas of federal black lung benefits, environmental protection, mine safety, sustainable energy, and economic analysis. About the job: 

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with demonstrated fundraising experience to help grow our organization. We are seeking a candidate who will help us develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan that aligns with the organization’s recently developed strategic plan. This position requires a candidate who is dedicated to ACLC’s mission and is excited about helping our organization increase our capacity so that we can continue responding to the needs of Appalachian communities.

The Development Director will facilitate ACLC’s planned growth by executing a fundraising plan that will grow our foundation portfolio and our major donor program while maintaining all existing donor and funder relationships.

Location:

The Development Director position will be based full-time in our office in Whitesburg.  Depending on the candidate’s level of experience and fit, ACLC will consider a remote hire or a hybrid option. (Some in-person meetings and events will be required.)

Requirements: 

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who has a demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a collegial setting. The new hire will be paired with the current development director for approximately three months before her departure to assist with the transition. ACLC seeks a Development Director with:

  • At least 5 years of prior nonprofit fundraising experience 
  • A proven track record of creating and enacting fundraising strategies, with success in soliciting and obtaining multi-year foundation grants. 
  • Experience securing major gifts, with an emphasis on building and maintaining relationships with individual donors.
  • Substantial experience creating compelling narratives that document the organization’s impact and results.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, keen attention to detail, who is exceptionally organized
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including willingness and ability to work as part of a team
  • A personal commitment to ACLC’s mission

Responsibilities:

  • Assist leadership with developing and executing ACLC’s fundraising plan
  • Grow ACLC’s current base of foundations and individual donors
  • Present and develop foundation proposals, including all tracking, communications, and reporting related to foundation grants
  • Develop and maintain relationships with ACLC’s individual donors, including all tracking, communications, and reporting related to donations
  • Develop and implement ACLC’s annual fundraising appeal
  • Oversee planning of fundraising events and other donor engagement activities
  • Work with ACLC staff to regularly document program impacts and prepare communications materials, such as newsletters, blogs, brochures, and more
  • Regularly engage ACLC’s board in fundraising, including facilitation of the organization’s fundraising committee
  • Assist with regular upkeep of ACLC’s website and social media pages

Salary Range: 

Based on our preferred qualifications, the expected salary range is between $60,000 – $75,000. However, if you feel that you have the skills and experience needed for the position but do not meet the exact qualifications, we encourage you to apply. Further, ACLC is willing to consider applicants with substantial experience who may fall outside of the stated salary range. ACLC is committed to equity in pay practices and will offer a competitive salary based on experience.
