Are you passionate about working to end homelessness in Maryland? Are you skilled in partnering with foundations and individuals to support the mission of a small nonprofit? Do you thrive as a development staff of one? If so, Homeless Persons Representation Project (HPRP), is seeking to hire a Development Director based either in its Baltimore or Silver Spring offices.
    Our Story: HPRP provides free legal services and advocacy to persons who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Maryland. HPRP’s services are grounded in the understanding that people without stable housing often struggle to access legal services offered in a traditional manner. The hallmark of HPRP’s legal program is its ability to reach clients where they live, eat, and spend time. HPRP’s staff and volunteers pursue this mission by offering legal services through outreach in shelters, drop-in centers, health clinics, community centers, and on the street.     HPRP seeks a full-time (40 hours per week) Development Director to join its dedicated staff. HPRP has two offices – a headquarters in Baltimore City and a satellite office in Silver Spring, Maryland. The goal of the Development Director is to work as a part of a team with HPRP’s Executive Director to secure and diversify HPRP’s annual budget of approximately $1.47 million by growing and expanding HPRP’s foundation and individual giving programs.
  Position reports to: Executive Director   Responsibilities include:
    Individual Giving  Donor cultivation – build on existing relationships to grow support (specifically their level of giving) from current donors  Donor acquisition – identify new individual prospects and grow HPRP’s audience of supporters  Major giving – strengthen relationships with major donors and grow HPRP’s base of this level support
    Foundations  Prospecting – together with HPRP’s Executive Director, research, identify and prioritize private foundations likely to provide support for HPRP’s vision to end homelessness in Maryland;  Cultivation – With HPRP staff, build relationships with prospective foundation funders  Securing support - Collaborate with HPRP staff, including Executive Director, to secure support from foundation funders, including through the preparation of grant applications and reports.
    Corporate Giving  Corporate giving is primarily pursued by HPRP’s Board of Directors. The Development Director’s responsibilities extend to: o Communication – creating materials that effectively articulate HPRP’s work, successes and the return on investment for corporate donors; and o Corporate Grant Writing – preparing a limited number of grant proposals (less than 10) and reports for corporate foundations prospected by Board Members
    Fundraising Program Management  Planning / strategy – based on strategies developed in conjunction with leadership, annually create and implement operational plans  Data management – maintain accurate and complete donor information  Evaluation / analysis – utilize the data reporting system to regularly assess the quality and effectiveness of fundraising efforts  Cultivation – assist in maintaining relationships with other key stakeholders and supporters  Communication – effectively communicate the systemic issues HPRP’s clients face and HPRP’s solutions and vision for change via social media, direct mail, promotional materials, etc.  Primary responsibility for drafting and publication of HPRP’s Annual Report
    General  Participate in HPRP’s ongoing race equity work  Work collaboratively and respectfully  Demonstrate ability to remain calm and patient in a fast-paced environment  Understand and communicate how racism and oppression have caused mass homelessness and have perpetuated barriers to housing and income.

 

Requirements: 
Required Qualifications:  Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree plus. Work history will be evaluated in conjunction with related degrees.  Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in non-profit resource development. Must demonstrate a track record of repeated, consistent success in growing funds for charitable causes.  Knowledge of current fundraising best practices, particularly in private foundation and individual giving (including major gifts)  Strong record of working collaboratively with Board, Executive and other staff leadership to meet shared fundraising targets  Donor data management and analysis proficiency  Experience with creating, implementing, and evaluating annual fundraising plans  Demonstrates a commitment to diversity and equity by using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences
    Salary $75,000-$84,000 DOE. HPRP provides excellent benefits: vacation (20 days per year), sick leave (10 days), personal days (3 days), and holidays. Employee premiums 100% covered for medical, prescription, dental, vision. Short and Long Term Disability Insurance and Retirement plan with supplemental employer contribution (a 1% contribution is approved for FY 2021) also provided. Some evening hours and occasional weekends required; HPRP provides for a flexible work schedule. During the COVID-19 pandemic, HPRP has created special family/dependent care leave and is primarily teleworking, with some use of office space as needed.   Preferred Qualifications:  Compassion and familiarity with the circumstances faced by people living in poverty and/or experiencing homelessness  Excellent oral and written communication skills  Strong inter-personal skills  Positive, flexible, assured, "can-do" attitude  Aptitude to work well under pressure, meet frequent deadlines and maintain confidentiality  Ability to set priorities and successfully manage a wide range of tasks  A team player with a strong sense of self-motivation with flexibility and good judgment  Experience with eTapestry  Facility with computer and internet technology, particularly in Microsoft Office for Windows (Excel, Word, Outlook, Powerpoint, Publisher, etc.), InDesign and social media.
