Deputy Director

Southern Arizona Legal Aid, Inc. (SALA) is hiring a full-time Deputy Director.  SALA provides services to the poverty community of nine counties in southeastern Arizona.  The Native American component also serves eleven tribal communities.  SALA provides legal services in civil litigation.

The Deputy Director is the leader responsible for enhancing the internal organization and infrastructure necessary for Southern Arizona Legal Aid’s (SALA) continued success and growth. An ideal candidate should be able to both think broadly and strategically about SALA’s work and also be detail oriented and organized about the implementation and structures necessary to move SALA’s vision into reality. The Deputy Director will report to and be supervised by the Executive Director. The Deputy Director will also work with and be a member of SALA’s management team.

The Deputy Director will be charged with building on SALA’s success by working alongside the Executive Director, Board of Directors and management team to further develop the organization’s vision to achieve its goals for continued financial stability and enhancing the impact of its mission. He/she will maintain a balanced culture which combines the richness and relevance of programs with the efficacy of best business practices, fiscal accountability, and institutional impact.

Requirements: 

Responsibilities

  • In the absence of the Executive Director, assume the responsibility for day-to-day program operations.
  • Training: Lead and coordinate training with the management team, identifying training needs, develop annual training programs for staff, and training evaluations, make assignments and monitor the preparation of training material and presentations.
  • Internal Communications and External Relations. Assume responsibility for convening regular meetings of staff, internal and external task forces, and for special projects. Along with Executive Director, the Deputy Director represents SALA within the national and state legal aid networks.
  • Staff Relations: Implement organization’s collective bargaining agreement, training SALA managers as needed. Review and approve initial Disciplinary Actions for Misconduct pursuant to SALA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). As necessary participate as a management representative in the grievance process ensuring compliance with the procedures mandated by the CBA. Participate as the management representative in union-management committees as needed (e.g. Safety Committee).
  • Board of Directors: Attend SALA Board of Directors’ meetings and provide reports, including SALA’s Advocacy Report to the Board as directed by the Executive Director.
  • Expanding and enhancing the quality and depth of SALA’s legal services. Fostering productive relationships with local, statewide, and national organizations, the public and funders.
  • Program Planning: Participate in program planning and development, including strategic planning. Help to ensure that SALA has a long range strategy which achieves its mission, and makes consistent and timely progress; help to maintain and apply a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in legal services at the local, state, and national levels.
  • Supervisory Duties: Immediate supervisor for office managers; oversee the legal work of SALA’s intake systems, substantive law units, VLP and satellite offices by conducting annual case reviews, co-counseling, assist with addressing organizational issues, assist with administration of grant oversight and assist with ensuring compliance with the regulations and policies of Legal Services Corporation (LSC), and other funders of SALA.
  • Assume responsibility for managing a unit, program and/or office in the absence of a manager.
  • Maintain expertise (by handling cases, reading legal journals and periodicals, providing consultation to other staff members, and attending training) in areas of family, housing, landlord/tenant, consumer, public benefits and bankruptcy law and in the fields of professional responsibility and Arizona practice and procedure, including appellate practice.
  • Provide mentoring and consultation (through discussions, case review, co-counseling, strategizing, reviewing and editing of pleadings, briefs and other papers, mootings, etc.) for case handling staff regarding their legal work.

Skills and Qualifications

 

  • JD required. Minimum 10 years of legal work experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years managerial experience.
  • Candidates must be admitted to the Arizona Bar or eligible to waive into the state bar.
  • Applicable/transferable experience: private sector roles in law, business strategy or consulting; public sector policy roles.
  • Mission-driven; passionate about SALA’s mission.
  • Experience working with governing bodies, including boards of directors, advisory committees, volunteers and commissions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse personalities, and the wide variety of professional backgrounds and experiences.
  • Highly proficient and knowledgeable in the use of computer software and tools (Microsoft Suite, legal Case Management Systems), and
  • Ability to summarize data and information for internal and external use.
  • Results/action-orientation; project management skills.
  • Good communication and negotiating skills.
  • Commitment to diversity.
  • Commitment to working with low income communities.
  • Strong strategic/financial analysis skills.
  • Spanish language proficiency (preferred but not required). Excellent written, verbal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to travel
