Chief Attorney

Description: 

Maryland Legal Aid announces an immediate opening for a full-time chief attorney in the Intake Services Unit of the Baltimore City office for qualified applicants. Responsibilities: Staff Supervision and Development • Provide dynamic, energetic management to walk-in and hotline intake staff in large, urban legal services office; • Supervise staff of lawyers, paralegals, and an administrative assistant to maximize use of their talents and to provide optimal service to clients; • Coordinate the delivery of legal advice and counsel with Intake staff and advocates in substantive law units in Baltimore City and statewide advocacy support services in the areas of family, consumer, foreclosure prevention, elder law, public benefits, and housing law in an efficient, effective, client-centered, and compassionate manner; • Manage all methods of intake, including walk-in, telephone, online chat and online intake; • Develop and maintain expertise in poverty law subject matter areas including landlord-tenant law, public and subsidized housing rights, foreclosure prevention, consumer law, bankruptcy, family law and protection from domestic violence, and state and federal public benefit programs; and • Keep abreast of latest technologies used to conduct intake and work with Executive staff and the firm’s IT department to employ that technology when cost-effective and beneficial to service delivery. 

Requirements: 

Strategy and Leadership • Develop and maintain good working relationships with external partners including the Bar, Judiciary, other providers of legal services, and funders; • Assist the Assistant Director of Advocacy for Training and Pro Bono with pro bono recruitment and placement efforts; • Participate in statewide task forces and advocacy efforts; • As part of a statewide management team, strive to enhance the overall quality of Maryland Legal Aid’s service delivery throughout the state; • Assist in carrying out Maryland Legal Aid’s strategic plan, which includes the integration of a human rights framework to all aspects of the office’s work; • Lead hiring efforts to attract talented staff to the unit who have a commitment to the mission and work of Maryland Legal Aid; • Guide the professional development of unit staff, which may include orientation and training, assessment of training needs; review of legal work; and meaningful quantitative and qualitative evaluation of service provided; • Oversee community education efforts of unit staff; • Develop and maintain expertise in Baltimore’s client communities and of all resources available to address client needs; • Address client grievances; • Ensure compliance with administrative and regulatory requirements; and • Any other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS: B.S./B.A. Degree; a J.D. or L.L. B. Degree; admission to a State Bar and/or qualify for admission to Maryland Bar; plus at least seven (7) years’ experience in legal services and/or law firm management.
