Attorney - Senior Law Project

Position:  Full Time Attorney – ILS Senior Law Project Bloomington office; Legal Assistance for Victimized Adults Project.

Organizational information: Indiana Legal Services, Inc. (ILS) is a statewide, not-for-profit organization that provides free legal services to eligible clients in civil cases through 8 branch offices. ILS is funded by the Legal Services Corporation, United Ways, Area Agencies on Aging, and approximately 20 other funding sources. 

Position Description: ILS has a grant from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute to provide direct legal representation to endangered adults statewide who are the victim of a crime.  This includes representation to halt ongoing abuse, along with representation to ease or eliminate the effects of the criminal behavior.  The project has two attorneys, located in South Bend and Indianapolis, and a paralegal to assist persons throughout Indiana.  We have received additional funding effective October 1, 2018 to place a third attorney in our Bloomington office to serve endangered adults in southern Indiana. The attorney will work with the Indiana Adult Protective Services Program and other groups that serve older and disabled adults to identify victims who desire and will benefit from individual legal representation.  This position offers an opportunity for someone committed to poverty law, to equal access to justice, and to providing assistance to victimized endangered adults, both seniors and the disabled.

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience. ILS offers an excellent fringe benefits package including health insurance (medical, dental, vision, Rx), disability insurance, life insurance, a 401k plan, a flex benefit plan, and generous vacation and sick leave. The attorney may be eligible for the ILS loan repayment assistance program (LRAP) as well as the Indiana Bar Foundation LRAP, LSC LRAP, College Cost Reduction Access Act and Higher Education Opportunity Act LRAP. ILS will pay up to $2,500 in moving expenses if the successful applicant needs to move from another city.

Requirements: 

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Represent endangered adults who are the victim of a crime.  
  • Work with Adult Protective Services and other groups to develop a referral network to identify clients that can benefit from this project.
  • Work with other LAVA staff.

Qualifications: 

  • Dedicated to the mission of Indiana Legal Services.
  • Licensed to practice law in Indiana.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to travel throughout the southern half of Indiana.
  • Interest in working with endangered adults who are victims of a crime.
