The Pro Bono Training Institute (PBTI) is an innovative online training program coordinated by LAFLA and One Justice. The goal of the Pro Bono Training Institute is to create a centralized and more efficient statewide legal services pro bono training system and to expand overall pro bono in the state by increasing pro bono access to trainings. PBTI collaborates with Legal Service Organizations experts (LSOs) in California to develop various pro bono substantive trainings on pbtraining.org and encourages its partners to use trainings to promote pro bono work. The Pro Bono Project Attorney will coordinate and develop online trainings for pro bono attorneys and volunteers. The Project Attorney will also work to maintain the overall PBTI technological operations.

LAFLA is currently accepting applications for the position of Attorney – Pro Bono Project.

 

Requirements: 
Qualifications:
  • Active membership in the California State Bar with minimum three years’ experience in legal services;
  • Understanding of the pro bono “systems” in California and locally;
  • Excellent writing, legal analytical, organizational, communication and oral presentation skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain positive relations with diverse populations and work cooperatively and effectively with individuals at all levels;
  • Demonstrated experience as a self-starter, with a history of independently managing multiple projects;
  • Ability to meet deadlines and perform multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail, and show initiative and manage time effectively;
  • Strong computer and technical problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and address problems efficiently;
  • Experience designing, developing and coordinating legal virtual trainings or educational curriculum;
  • Experience with virtual adult learning principles, digital technology used to facilitate learning, and visual communication and design;
  • Enthusiasm for technological innovation for expansion of legal services for low-income Californians and volunteers.
  Examples of Duties:
  • Coordinate attorney trainers from the legal community to develop substantive pro bono legal trainings and resources;
  • Analyze and assess substantive legal content for consideration for PBTI training development;
  • Organize substantive law, legal procedure, strategy and practice tips into structural modules to develop and design online PowerPoint trainings, templates, manuals, and resource materials, taking into account recent innovations in legal adult learning techniques and technology innovations for the PBTI website and general pro bono needs;
  • Record and edit legal content and training curriculum, and upload virtual trainings on PBTI system platform;
  • Maintain pbtraining.org website, LMS platform and other related software to ensure efficiency in website performance, including content management, MCLE generation, data collection and metrics, and user access;
  • Review PBTI recorded trainings to identify changes in laws or procedures and coordinate updates to modules;
  • Work with One Justice manager and website contractor for continued PBTI maintenance, and to research and make recommendations for future improvements to website, content management, user experience, MCLE generation, and audio-visual training development process;
    • Draft content for PBTI training newsletters to reflect legal needs of pro bono attorneys;
    • Assist with coordinating and evaluating pro bono legal clinics and projects for engagement with volunteers;
    • Provide attorney perspective to help develop and implement internal pro bono systems and projects to ensure efficiency with volunteer recruitment, coordination, and reporting;
