Assistant Controller

Description: 

Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA), one of California’s most prominent non-profit, public interest law firms for over 50 years, has an immediate opening for a non-profit Assistant Controller to join the Accounting Department. The Assistant Controller’s primary function is to assist with grantor billings, accounts receivable, month-end closing and related month-end journal entries and account reconciliations. The position will provide support during grantor monitoring visits and audits. The Assistant Controller will also be fully cross-trained on and assist with other critical accounting functions including accounts payable and payroll.

The Assistant Controller reports to the Controller and assists the CFO/COO, and other accounting and administrative staff as needed. The Assistant Controller should demonstrate expertise in general non-profit accounting, seek to understand and accurately implement NLSLA’s accounting policies and procedures to safeguard the organization’s assets, and promote an environment of compliance with government and grantor regulations. The Assistant Controller should be detail oriented, analytical and well organized, demonstrate strong technological and communication skills, and enjoy working in a team environment.

Starting salary is $65,000+ depending on experience. NLSLA provides exceptional benefits including medical, dental, vision and life insurance, contributions to a 403(b) tax saving retirement account, and paid vacations, sick time and holidays.

Bachelor of Arts degree and 5 years of accounting experience. Candidates with non-profit accounting practical experience is preferred.

NLSLA has a highly diverse staff of 135+ and a 2019 operating budget of $17 million. There are four primary offices: Pacoima, Glendale, El Monte, and The Wellness Center in Boyle Heights bordering downtown. NLSLA’s Administrative Office is located upstairs in Glendale, where Fiscal, Human Resources and Development are located.
