Advocacy Manager

JOB SUMMARY: 

Texas Legal Services Center’s (TLSC) Crime Victims Program provides direct legal services to victims of violent crime, which includes providing legal advice and referrals by phone, representing victims in court, and advocating on behalf of victims who are navigating the criminal justice system. Depending on the needs of the program, this position will provide trauma-informed services to victims including interviewing potential clients, advocating for clients with social service providers, and conducting outreach. This position will also supervise the work of legal advocates, intake specialists, and social work students as needed.

This employee in this position is expected to:

Maintain the highest ethical and professional standards; adhere to the American Bar Association Standards for the Provision of Civil Legal Aid; embrace and support Texas Legal Service Center’s (TLSC) overall mission; and comply with all grant requirements, regulations, standards, policies, and confidentiality requirements.  

This is a grant-funded position.

 

Requirements: 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  

  • Provide holistic, comprehensive, and trauma-informed advocacy to crime victims seeking resource/referral services both in person and by phone.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with community partners in order to increase capacity to expedite better results for victims.
  • Provide assistance with safety-planning, legal options, supportive counseling, filing protective orders, applications for crime victim’s compensation, court accompaniment, and systems advocacy.
  • Advocate on behalf of victims within various systems to secure housing, increase financial literacy, and obtain health care, education, and public benefits.
  • Work with attorneys to ensure an atmosphere of empathy, safety, and support.
  • Attend and participate in multi-disciplinary collaborative meetings.
  • Give trainings to other advocates, legal professionals, and law enforcement.
  • Communicate with callers and clients in a culturally sensitive, trauma-informed manner.
  • Supervise legal advocates, paralegals, intake specialists, and social work students. 
  • Travel to out-of-town locations.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • May provide education to community organizations through outreach, presentations and attendance at local community events focused on victim services.
  • May create written informational and educational content regarding victim advocacy.
  • Provide all information needed/requested for TLSC reporting in a prompt manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION REQUIRED:

  • Master of Social Work degree.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: 

  • Five years of relevant experience working with vulnerable populations. 
  • Experience working with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
  • Experience in crisis counseling.  

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Ability to work with clients in a compassionate, patient, trauma-informed, and non-judgmental manner.
  • Ability to supervise, train, lead, and motivate staff.
  • High-level organization skills. 
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills.
  • Strong time management and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with (or the ability to learn) LegalServer (TLSC’s case management system), Adobe, and Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to travel to out-of-town locations.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS PREFERRED:

  • Fluency in Spanish.
  • Familiarity with the Texas Crime Victims Compensation program.
  • Previous experience supervising and/or managing staff.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Sedentary work that involves sitting most of the time. 
  • Occasional bending, squatting, and kneeling.
  • Exerting up to ten pounds of force occasionally, and a negligible amount of force as needed, at times to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
