The Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network, Inc. (PLAN) is accepting applications for a full-time accountant. This position reports to the Director of Finance and is an integral part of PLAN’s accounting team. The Accountant for PLAN, Inc. is responsible for the day-to-day accuracy of varied financial reports, records, expense reviews, payroll and tax reports, and insurance coverages. The accountant will work closely with the PLAN Director of Finance to ensure accurate financial records within the accounting system, provide support in grant tracking and reporting, and provide support in the development of budgets, both for the organizational budget as well as grant budgets.

PLAN, Inc. is a client-centered nonprofit organization established to improve the availability and quality of civil legal aid for low-income people across Pennsylvania. PLAN supports a statewide consortium of 15 independently run regional and specialty legal services organizations (LSOs). It coordinates the delivery of civil legal assistance to the Pennsylvanians who need it most. PLAN advocates for and delivers funding for the network, supports the programs delivering legal aid through training and technical assistance, and ensures effective use of funds. 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network, Inc. (PLAN) is accepting applications for a full-time accountant. This position reports to the Director of Finance and is an integral part of PLAN’s accounting team. The Accountant for PLAN, Inc. is responsible for the day-to-day accuracy of varied financial reports, records, expense reviews, payroll and tax reports, and insurance coverages. The accountant will work closely with the PLAN Director of Finance to ensure accurate financial records within the accounting system, provide support in grant tracking and reporting, and provide support in the development of budgets, both for the organizational budget as well as grant budgets.

DUTIES:

  • Must develop a thorough knowledge of all grant agreements, grant budgets, and allowability of costs. Prior knowledge of the OMB Uniform Guidance is preferred.
  • Responsible for processing payroll, verifying staff time and accuracy of tax deductions, employee contributions to 403b.
  • Provide support to director of finance as needed for general ledger reconciliations for the annual audit.   
  • Assist in the preparation of schedules for the annual audit.
  • Work with bookkeeper to prepare 1099, 1099-NEC, and 1096 and submit to appropriate agencies. 
  • Prepare internal financial reports for PLAN, Inc. staff as needed, including budget to actual reports for events and projects.
  • Provide support in the monthly cost allocation process.  This may include running reports out of Legal Server, providing a final monthly trial balance, and other tasks as needed by the director of finance.
  • Provide support in the completion of PLAN’s reports to PLAN Inc.’s major funders within contract guidelines for both PLAN, Inc. and affiliated legal services programs. 
  • Review reconciliations of all bank accounts for approval by PLAN, Inc. director of finance. 
  • Review accounts payables and receivables.
  • Gather statewide data and update insurance files for quotes on property and liability coverage.   Gather statewide payroll information for Worker’s Compensation insurance quotes and audit. 
  • Perform other duties as required.  

 

IDEAL SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND COMPETENCIES: 

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of experience. Four years of bookkeeping experience and fifteen college credits in accounting may be substituted for college graduation. Ability to develop, lead, and collaborate on projects that seek to advance access to justice for lower income persons, victims of domestic violence, and other marginalized communities.

  • Knowledge of generally-accepted accounting principles and procedures.
  • Ability to apply accounting principles to a variety of accounting and fiscal scenarios.
  • Ability to assemble, analyze, and prepare reports and statements of financial data.
  • Excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Interpersonal abilities that are professional and discreet and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of personalities with assertiveness and diplomacy.
  • Strong organization, prioritization, planning, and critical thinking skills, and the ability to track and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and advanced computer skills (SharePoint, spreadsheets).
  • Familiarity with grant fiscal reporting.
  • Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and to take initiative.
  • Strong work ethic and flexibility to work long hours when required.
  • Ability to travel (overnight stays may be required).
  • Relevant job or educational experience which demonstrate the ability to perform the job.

 

Preferred: Non-profit accounting experience preferred. Experience in federal government grant accounting and reporting a plus.

LOCATION: This position affords hybrid work. Ability to travel throughout the State of Pennsylvania may be required at times. Should business needs require physical presence, teleworking will not be possible.

SALARY: Salary depends on experience. Target salary range for this position is 3-5 years’ experience/ $55,000 – $65,000. Staff are offered excellent benefits, including health, dental, vision insurance, life, and disability insurance, along with retirement benefits.
