Race Equity with Whitney Knox Lee, Esq. and Milo Primeaux, Esq.
 

Let's do race equity! We're proud to present this interactive two-part workshop on the 7 Keys for Anti-Racist Supervision.
In our first 90 minutes together we'll talk about the myths that sustain white supremacy, how white dominant cultures pervade our workplaces, and what you can do to create a more equitable workplace culture.
In the second 90 minute block we’ll help you to be a more inclusive supervisor.  We'll spend time on critical feedback -- how to give it to someone else who says or does something racist, and how to receive it when we are the ones who cause harm.
No matter where you are starting from, we want everyone to leave this session more curious, confident, and ready to put the 7 Keys to work!

Whitney Knox Lee, Esq. (she/her) is a Supervising Attorney at Georgia Legal Services Program where she represents low-income tenants in public and subsidized housing cases to ensure housing stability and eviction prevention. Whitney is an active member of the Race Equity Team at GLSP and has a sincere interest in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace. In her race equity work at GLSP, she aims to serve and support employees and to help equip advocates with tools and context to best advocate for and meet the needs of marginalized clients and communities.

Milo Primeaux, Esq. (he/they) is a white queer transgender person and long-time LGBTQ+ rights and anti-oppression advocate. In addition to running a solo civil rights practice in New York State focusing on LGBTQ+ discrimination, Milo is the founder and CEO of Just Roots Consulting, LLC, which helps organizations nationwide become industry leaders in equity and inclusion. Milo brings almost 20 years of professional experience educating people about their legal rights, developing new leadership, and fostering critical awareness rooted in anti-oppression principles and cultural humility. He is a graduate of the Ohio State University and the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law.

Additional Sessions include:
Core Duties of Legal Aid Supervisors–­ This session provides an overview of the multidimensional role of the legal services supervisor, and the importance of making the time for intentional and proactive supervision. It introduces the many opportunities for supervision skill‐building that this training offers through.

Supervision Systems– This session will provide an overview of a comprehensive and intentional supervision system. We will discuss the importance of intentional supervision and review the components of a supervision system that will build strength in your unit and program and help ensure quality legal work is provided to clients.  The challenges of supervising remotely will be considered as aspects of quality systems are reviewed. 

Retaining a Quality Staff and Building a Culture of Professional Development– This session will be a moderated panel discussion of two experienced and two newer legal aid supervisors touching on the necessary ingredients to help retain staff once you have invested the time and effort into training them. The panel will touch on how retention begins with the hiring process and aligning new staff with the goals of the organization; the importance of transparency in supervision and program activities, secondhand trauma and the awareness of the difficulties of legal aid work, creating leadership opportunities, formal and informal, and how all of these issues tie into other important topics that will be covered throughout this training.
