Cyber Risk Management

June 23, 24 and 25, 2021
starting at 2 pm Eastern time each day for 75 minutes

Why?

Cybersecurity risks are rapidly evolving and have grown with the sudden and ongoing move to remote work due to the pandemic. In response, technologies and best practices have evolved to help reduce the risk of successful breaches as well as their impact on your organization.

These sessions will provide what you need to know to meet your ethical and fiduciary responsibilities, to minimize disruptions to your program, and to protect sensitive client and staff information.

 Who?

Designed for Executive Leadership including your Executive and Deputy Directors,
Board Chair, and accidental tech managers.

What?

June 23 Part I: Legal Aid Cybersecurity 101 and Cyber Liability Insurance

Legal Aid programs are under constant attack by automated and human actors attempting to penetrate our networks, systems and services, hijack provider technology to launch further attacks, encrypt/shutdown provider systems for ransom and/or steal confidential client and employee data.   Numerous legal aid providers have been victims of cyber incidents which have disrupted client services and cost programs significant amounts of money. Understanding and managing cybersecurity risks is a critical role for program leaders.

This 75-minute session will cover current cybersecurity risks, and the technologies and strategies that help manage those risks, as well as insurance options and benefits that providers should consider.

The panel is geared for non-technical managers and executives who want to develop a working understanding of the topics that they can take back to their programs.

Cybersecurity risk topics covered include: hacking, phishing, malware, user authentication, and mobile device issues.

Risk management strategies and technologies covered include: security culture, policies and training, backups and business continuity, security assessments, system/server monitoring, data management, identity management, multi-factor authentication, mobile device management, and endpoint detection and response.

The session will also cover the basics of cyber liability insurance, why organizations purchase it, typical costs of a cyber incident, what organizations can do to help ensure their policies get renewed and their premiums don’t skyrocket.

The panelists will share their recommendations on low-cost steps providers can take right now to help reduce their cyber risks and checklists providers can use to help assess their current security vulnerabilities. The panelists will leave at least 15 minutes for participant questions.

The panelists are:

  • Molly French, PMP, Technology Manager, Colorado Legal Services
  • Joseph Melo, Director of Engineering, Just-Tech
  • Chas Bellingrath, Partner & Cyber Practice Leader, ARC Excess & Surplus of MA LLC

Moderated by John Greiner, President, Just-Tech

June 24 – Part II: Cybersecurity in Context for 2021 and Beyond

This 75-minute session will share insights on security-related management responsibilities from programmatic, operational, technology, and funder perspectives. Standards and expectations you should understand will be provided.

Legal aid providers are increasingly leveraging more integrated and accessible on-site and cloud technologies for social media client connections, online intake, case management, telephone service, document management, collaboration, document assembly, grant management, fundraising, accounting and human resources. Staff members and volunteers are accessing those systems inside and outside the office and, significantly, often using personally owned equipment to do so.

This session will address how providers manage their technology systems and the associated cybersecurity risks, how they plan and budget for technology, the challenges of building a security culture within their organizations, how cyber risks have changed their practices and priorities, and how to ensure provider tech staff and contractors have the cybersecurity skills and capacities needed to manage day-to-day operations.

Panelists will address the continuing security implications of Covid-19 including the rapid roll-out of new technology to support remote work and the use of personally owned equipment. This session will also provide funder perspectives on how legal aid groups are addressing cybersecurity and can move forward to better protect client and staff data while reducing disruptions. The panelists will leave at least 15 minutes for participant questions.

The panelists are:

  • Dina Brownstein, IT Director, Greater Boston Legal Services
  • Patrick M. Cicero, Executive Director, Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network
  • Sara Meyers, COO, New York Legal Assistance Group
  • David Bonebrake, Program Counsel, Legal Services Corporation
  • Jada Breegle, Chief Information Officer, Legal Services Corporation

Moderated by John Greiner, President, Just-Tech

June 25 – Part III: Ethical Implications for Cybersecurity and Risk Responsibilities Roundtable

This 75-minute session will start with a primer on the ethical implications of the rules of professional responsibility for attorneys and law firms managing cyber risks. The second part of the session will be a roundtable discussion with program leaders focusing on the evolving responsibilities in cybersecurity, and practical guidance on meeting those responsibilities while minimizing disruptions.

The panel will discuss the roles of executives, supervisors and staff in developing and maintaining better security practices, the nexus of cybersecurity with disaster response and business continuity, how board members may be brought into the discussion, and how to integrate cybersecurity into broader program planning and client service delivery. The panelists will leave at least 15 minutes for participant questions.

The panelists are:

  • Phong Wong, Pro Bono Director, Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles
  • Lewis Creekmore, Executive Director, New Mexico Legal Aid
  • Liliana Ibara, Deputy Director, Greater Boston Legal Services
  • John N. Gallo, CEO/Executive Director, Legal Aid Chicago
  • Greg L. Landry, Executive Director, Acadiana Legal Services Corporation
