Ensuring Justice in a World of Artificial Intelligence and High Tech Tools, with Virginia Eubanks, author of Automating Inequality: How High Tech Tools Profile, Police and Punish the Poor
Exciting new developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other technologies impact the delivery of civil legal aid to our client communities and require that we understand the practical impact of those tools on justice for poor and working-class people in the United States. Virginia Eubanks, author of Automating Inequality: How High-Tech Tools Profile, Police and Punish the Poor, will provide her findings from in-depth investigations into the Indiana welfare system, the Los Angeles homeless services system, and a Pennsylvania child welfare risk assessment system. This session will include a discussion about how our increasingly automated world affects our clients and advocacy.

Digital Data Retention and Destruction Policies
Legal aid case management systems store a significant amount of personal and confidential data from our clients, their family members, opposing parties, staff, and others. Risks associated with the data increase as the amount of data we collect grows. Does your organization have current policies regarding the retention and destruction of data? What precautions does your organization have in place to avoid losses that can occur due to hacking into the program's network, improper access to or loss of portable technology, or inappropriate use of the web or information by staff? The panelists will also discuss the ethics and e-discovery implications of not having appropriate data retention and destruction policies.

Project Management for Legal Aid Leadership

As more legal service providers are prioritizing technology as a means towards achieving 100% access to justice, program managers and leaders without significant technology-related experience are designing, planning, and managing technology-related projects. While agile project management techniques are primarily used for highly technical projects, the general concepts can be very useful for program managers and leadership. This session will offer a practical guide to project management with an emphasis on how to apply agile project management structure to technology projects and day-to-day operations within an organization.
