Demystifying Operating Reserves for Legal Aid Organizations

MIE presents a Webinar

Gretchen Upholt, MPA

FMA - Fiscal Strength for Nonprofits

Monday, March 23, 2020

2:00 – 3:30 PM EDT

What are the most effective strategies for identifying and building up to the right level of reserves for your legal aid organization?

Are you prepared to respond to questions from funders and partners about your organization’s level of reserves?

Join this webinar to gain an understanding of both the principles and mechanics of reserve funds, including how operating reserves fit into your overall capital structure and how an effective strategy around reserves can bolster your organization’s long-term sustainability.

Topics will include:

  • Defining and calculating operating reserves;
  • Determining the right amount of operating reserves for your organization;
  • Implementing a strategy to build up to a reserves goal, including implications for the diversification of revenue and the importance of full-cost budgeting;
  • Developing and implementing a board-approved operating reserves policy and managing operating reserves once the required amount is in place; and
  • Communicating the “story” behind your organization’s reserve strategy to funders and other stakeholders.

Are you:

  • The executive director of a legal aid organization;
  • The finance director other financial staff;
  • A grants manager responsible for budgeting and allocating costs among multiple funding sources;
  • A board member who wants to understand what an appropriate level of operational reserves would be?

 If so, this webinar is for you!
