MIE will present a webinar on October 5, 2017 addressing the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and how Legal Aid, and other employers, can incorporate the law’s requirements in their organizations’ policies and procedures.

The changes proposed by President Obama in 2016 were delayed, but legal aid programs need to make sure that their policies and record keeping procedures comply with the current requirements and they are ready to adjust to the anticipated changes when they are implemented.

Our speakers for this webinar are: Ronald W, Taylor and Lillian L. Reynolds. Both are lawyers in the Baltimore office of Venable LLP.

Legal aid managers across the country have expressed interest in a number of FLSA issues which will be covered in this webinar including: 
 

• ​Independent contractors, for example, CPAs who come into an organization regularly to supplement the work of fiscal staff;
• Exempt vs. non-exempt status for paralegals, administrative managers;
• Comp time for exempt/nonexempt staff, for example, union contracts which provide comp time;
• Documentation for work performed off site or during travel;
• Dealing with the 24/7 office culture using both employer issued and personal technology and devices;
• Updates on the overtime rule, for example, attorneys practicing law, legal aid attorneys earning less than the proposed new salary amounts.
   

Ron Taylor heads Venable's Maryland Labor and Employment Practice Group.
He advises and defends employers nationwide on occupational safety and health issues and on a wide variety of labor and employment law matters, including wage and hour, privacy, non-compete, collective bargaining, employment discrimination, disability, and wrongful discharge. Mr. Taylor has long been active in the American Bar Association's Occupational Safety & Health Law Committee and was the management co-chair from 1998 to 2001. Mr. Taylor has been consistently selected as one of the best lawyers in Maryland by Woodard & Wight and as a Maryland Superlawyer in the area of labor and employment law, having been repeatedly selected as one of the top 100 lawyers in the state. He is a fellow of the prestigious College of Labor & Employment Lawyers.


Lily Reynolds is a litigation associate in Venable’s Labor and Employment Group. She focuses her practice on counseling and representation for employers in a wide variety of industries, including hospitality, retail, construction, and government contracts.  Ms. Reynolds routinely counsels employers about their employment actions and policies, including drafting employment agreements, reviewing employee handbooks, advising public accommodation clients about their obligations under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and counseling clients regarding compliance with federal wage and hour laws. Ms. Reynolds has an active pro bono practice and has represented nonprofit and individual clients in a wide variety of matters, including assisting local nonprofit organizations with labor relations, litigation, and employment counseling. Ms. Reynolds is the 2015 recipient of the Maryland State Bar Association Section of Young Lawyers and the Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland’s Alex Fee Memorial Pro Bono Service Award.


Gene King is the former director of the Ohio Poverty Law Center and a career legal aid lawyer and manager. He is now consulting on staff development, executive recruitment and policy advocacy with legal aid programs and nonprofit advocacy groups.  Gene will facilitate this webinar.
