VICE PRESIDENT, ADVANCEMENT & EXTERNAL AFFAIRS
Organization Description
An internationally recognized force in poverty law, Bet Tzedek was founded in 1974 by community leaders acting upon the tenet of Jewish law and tradition, “Tzedek, tzedek, tirdof – Justice, justice you shall pursue.” This doctrine decrees that it is the duty of all people to address social and economic inequalities. Consistent with this teaching, each year Bet Tzedek’s staff and volunteers help more than 20,000 low-income Angelenos of every religious and racial background achieve equal access to justice. While the organization’s roots are in the Jewish community, more than 90% of Bet Tzedek’s clients have no such religious affiliation.
Bet Tzedek’s programs are run by legal professionals. Areas of expertise include employment rights, elder justice/ caregiver law, Holocaust reparations, affordable housing, human trafficking, public benefits and real estate. Legal work encompasses a range of community outreach and education, pro bono legal assistance, direct legal services and public policy work. The organization is recognized for groundbreaking class action litigation in the areas of employment rights, public benefits, and housing.
Position Description
Bet Tzedek seeks an engaging, dynamic professional to support and advance the organization’s mission and impact. Reporting to the President & CEO, the Vice President of Advancement & External Affairs (V.P.) provides strategic leadership for the development and external affairs department and oversight of all development, government relations and communications activities. The V.P. will work with the Bet Tzedek’s Board, management team, union, staff and clients, as well as with external stakeholders, such as individuals, corporate and foundation funders, elected officials, pro bono partners, the court, and partner nonprofits. The V.P. will provide direction and lead a six member team of high achieving staff to maximize the organization’s potential in implementing current and future goals.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to, and experience in the public interest sphere, including in the areas of legal services, impact litigation, public policy and/or social movement work. The position requires highly developed social, public speaking and written advocacy skills, fundraising ability and significant leadership capability, including hands on management experience. The ideal candidate should have: BA/BS required; law degree or legal services experience preferred, 5+ years of fund development and communications experience, proven leadership and supervisory experience motivating staff and volunteers, experience interfacing with dynamic and sophisticated business leaders and philanthropic institutions and experience with Raisers Edge, Emma, Adobe and MS Office programs preferred. Above all, the V.P. must be deeply passionate about Bet Tzedek’s mission of ensuring equal access to justice for all.
