Veterans Legal Corps Fellow

Description: 

The Veterans Legal Corps Fellow will be responsible for expanding the work of LAFLA’s Veterans Justice Center by providing direct representation on Veterans Benefits and Discharge Upgrade claims, performing community outreach and staffing clinics, and identifying and managing cases for pro bono placement.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Manage independent veterans benefits and military discharge upgrade caseload, which includes interviewing clients, developing case plans, propounding discovery, legal research and filing claims;
  • Represent Veterans in administrative hearings before the Department of Veterans Affairs, Board of Veterans’ Appeals, or the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims;
  • Assume responsibility for major impact caseload including complex cases;
  • Place and supervise veterans benefits cases with pro bono attorneys and law students;
  • Staff community clinics for Veterans who are homeless and/or very low-income; and
  • Develop materials to publicize the project to a variety of audiences.

 

Requirements: 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Active membership in the California State Bar or intending to take the CA State Bar in July 2015;
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving the needs of low-income people and/or the Veteran community;
  • Strong lawyering skills, such as client interviewing and case evaluation, legal research and writing, discovery, negotiations, and trial practice;
  • Knowledge of Veterans Administration benefits or Discharge Upgrade claims and appeals processes, public assistance/government benefits programs and health programs desirable; and
  • Previous experience in a legal services program preferred.
