Supervising Attorney

Be a part of history!  Join the Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) and become part of an energetic team of advocates that provides a wide-range of legal services  addressing the needs of the poor of Los Angeles County. These legal services include  client representation, litigation, impact work (policy & legislative advocacy and litigation), and community education and outreach.

NLSLA is seeking a Supervising Attorney to oversee its Coordinated Attorney Team. The ideal candidate will have the demonstrated ability to mentor, supervise and motivate a team of younger lawyers across multiple practice areas and forums. The supervisor must have significant legal experience and expertise in one or more of the following poverty law practice areas: Immigration, or Public Benefits, and/or Family Law (with a focus on domestic violence). The Supervising Attorney will be based either in  NLSLA’s Pacoima or El Monte office.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced  attorney who can excel in a fast-paced, dynamic anti-poverty law practice in the areas identified above and is capable of supervising and mentoring newer lawyers in multiple forums. The candidate must be self-motivated with the ability to work as part of a team overseeing and leading the case and impact work of a diverse group of lawyers. The candidate must have a demonstrated passion and commitment to public interest law and prior experience serving low-income individuals and client groups, with a sensitivity to those in crisis including survivors of domestic violence. The ideal candidate should  possess strong research and organizational skills; the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing; the ability to oversee multiple projects; and well-developed analytical skills.  Experience handling administrative hearings, court hearings and trials is preferred. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is strongly preferred.This supervising attorney will be part of a leadership team supervising a group of diverse attorneys providing assistance in immigration, public benefits, and family law. The supervisor will be responsible for supervising and mentoring the  lawyers in representing survivors of domestic violence with their immigration petitions (U, T Visas and VAWA), public benefits issues (including CalWORKs, CalFresh and GR), and  family law disputes (including  restraining order hearings, and trials). The supervising attorney will also be responsible for managing grant compliance, ensuring grant deliverables are met, coordinating collaborative efforts with other parts of the program, and working in partnership with other agencies. Frequent travel to other NLSLA branch offices, courts, government agencies, shelters and community-based organizations throughout southern California is required.

 

Requirements: 

Must be licensed and eligible to practice law in California with at least five years of experience and experience or the ability to supervisor and mentor a team of attorneys. Experience in immigration law, a working knowledge of public benefits law and/or family law is also required.
