Staff Attorney - Shriver Housing Project

Description:

Be a part of history!  Join the Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) and become part of an energetic team of advocates that provides a wide-range of legal services aimed to address issues that disproportionately impact the poor.  These services include litigation, providing training and technical assistance, and community education.

NLSLA is seeking a Staff Attorney for its Stanley Mosk Courthouse site.  The Staff Attorney will be an integral part of a dynamic team of advocates from 4 public interest law offices working on a three-year pilot project to examine the impact of legal services on individuals, the court and the community in the Unlawful Detainer system.  The ideal candidate will be a skillful attorney who can excel in a fast-paced, dynamic anti-poverty law practice and is capable of fiercely advocating on behalf of NLSLA clients. The candidate must have a demonstrated passion and commitment to public interest law.  Prior experience serving low-income individuals and client groups, with a sensitivity to those in crisis is preferred. The ideal candidate must possess strong research and organizational skills; the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing; and well-developed analytical skills.  Of critical importance is that the candidate be self-motivated with the ability to work independently. Bilingual verbal, reading, and writing proficiency in Spanish is required.

Requirements:

Duties and Responsibilities: Attorneys will help staff an office in the Mosk Courthouse in downtown LA to interview clients, prepare answers to complaints in unlawful detainer (eviction) matters, provide brief advice, and access clients’ case for potential representation. Staff attorneys will also be involved in developing and supporting a unique system of language access services, participating in pro bono efforts (Shriver Corps) and/or conducting trial preparation workshops for limited scope representation clients. The staff attorneys are not expected to represent tenants in court.  Minimal travel to other NLSLA branch offices, courts, government agencies, shelters and community-based organizations throughout southern California may be required.
