Staff Attorney -- Immigrant Justice Program
Legal Services of Southern Piedmont, a non-profit provider of civil legal assistance to low-income persons in the Charlotte area and Western North Carolina, seeks candidates for Staff Attorney assigned to its Immigrant Justice Program to provide assistance in immigration and civil law. The purpose of the LSSP Immigrant Justice Program (IJP) is to protect low-income, non-English-speaking Hispanic residents and immigrants from all nations from exploitation, to ensure accessibility of public services, to stabilize the immigration status of clients, and to provide remedies despite barriers to redress. The program provides individual advice and representation to low-income non-English-speaking immigrants before state and federal courts, administrative agencies and legislative bodies; conducts community legal education programs; educates community agencies concerning the legal rights of immigrants; and assists those agencies in serving the needs of immigrants. Salary: $41,500+ depending on experience; generous leave and benefits.
Qualifications: NC Bar license, eligibility for reciprocity or plan to take NC Bar exam; demonstrated commitment to low-income people; strong communication and analytical ability; strong interest in individual and systemic advocacy, self-motivated, creative and dependable. Sufficient proficiency in Spanish to conduct client interviews without interpreter is required.
