Foreclosure Prevention Project

 

Position: 2 Staff Attorneys

 

Lone Star Legal Aid (LSLA) seeks two exceptionally dedicated full-time Staff Attorneys for its Foreclosure Prevention Project.  The Attorneys will seek to increase and enhance meaningful access to the justice system for clients facing foreclosure and help homeowners and their families fight foreclosure and stabilize their housing.  The Attorneys will work as a team and serve clients throughout LSLA’s 72 county service area.  They will seek to enhance meaningful access to the justice system for clients facing foreclosure, engage in community outreach and education, community partnerships, and legal representation and counseling. 

 

Summary of Responsibilities:

 

The Staff Attorneys must be able to gather evidence, conduct civil lawsuits, draft legal documents and advise clients about their legal rights.  Foreclosure issues to be addresses include but are not limited to:

 

1) Defending mortgage servicing abuses;

2) Negotiating loan modifications and mortgage loan interest rate reductions;

3) Reviewing and invalidating wrongful liens;

4) Utilizing consumer statutes to assert federal defenses to preserve homes;

5) Defending against homeowner association foreclosures;

6) Representing homeowners facing property tax foreclosure;

7) Clearing title to properties to preserve home ownership; and

8) Filing Chapter 13 bankruptcy to stop a foreclosure sale.  

 

 

The Staff Attorneys must also be able to interview clients and witnesses, as well as handle other details in preparation for client legal representation.  They may supervise and coordinate activities of other legal, clerical, volunteer, or student workers.  They will be expected to handle a caseload, engage in major litigation, attend evening legal clinics and community meetings, and travel extensively. 

 
Requirements: 
Qualifications:  • Graduate of an accredited law school • Licensed to practice in Texas or qualify for reciprocity • Prior legal services or public interest work preferred • Strong legal writing and oral communication skills • Experience with or demonstrated commitment to low-income and/or vulnerable populations • Skilled in interviewing, assessment, problem solving, negotiation, and trial work  • Strong ability to work under pressure, independently, and make decisions quickly • Demonstrated ability to aggressively pursue the rights of the client community • Preference will be given to applicants with bilingual ability in Spanish or Vietnamese • Energetic, motivated and self-starter   Compensation • $54,000 to $100,000 annual salary, depending upon experience and bar admission date • Generous fringe benefits package, including health and dental insurance, paid leave, retirement benefits after first year   Location:   The Staff Attorneys will be housed in LSLA’s Waco and Longview Branch Offices and will travel throughout LSLA’s 72 county service area.   They must have reliable transportation.
