Staff Attorney in Employment Unit

Description:

Community Legal Services (CLS) of Philadelphia is seeking an attorney for the Employment Unit.  CLS is one of the leading legal services programs in the country.

Community Legal Services, Inc. seeks an attorney with up to five years of legal experience for a job in our Employment Unit.

The work of our Employment Unit focuses on representation of low wage workers and is significantly different from traditional plaintiff-side employment law representation. Our top priorities are in the following areas:

  • Barriers to employment - criminal records, child abuse, expungement cases
  • Job preservation cases (especially for people on medical leave) - FMLA, ADA
  • Income streams related to employment - pensions, employer-provided disability benefits
  • Cases involving ability to work - occupational licenses, patient abuse registry, non-compete agreements
  • Wage cases
  • Cases involving immigrant workers or welfare-to-work situations
  • Cases involving the misclassification of employees as independent contractors

This position will focus heavily on expungement work for clients whose criminal records are preventing them from obtaining employment.

Attorneys in the Employment Unit are expected to handle a significant caseload of individual clients. In addition, they are expected to contribute to our impact advocacy in our priority areas, including through legislative and policy advocacy and class action and other impact litigation. They are also asked to engage in community education.

Community Legal Services offers excellent benefits and salaries that are competitive with other public interest law firms.

Community Legal Services, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer.  CLS, Inc. does not discriminate in the selection of employees on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, national origin, disability, or veteran status.  CLS strongly encourages applications from people of color, gay men and lesbians, and members of underserved or disadvantaged communities.
