Maryland Legal Aid Baltimore County office located in Towson, Maryland announces an immediate opening for a full-time staff attorney for qualified applicants.  To apply online, click here.   Duties: Handle all functions related to case work from initial intake through representation of clients before all relevant agencies, courts, etc. Staff attorneys may be expected to work with other attorneys, law graduates, legal assistants/paralegals, social workers, and students on cases or projects. Maintain case files in accordance with Maryland Legal Aid standards. Responsibilities assigned may include any or all of, but are not limited to, the following:   Responsibilities: Maryland Legal Aid has been awarded a contract by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (“DHMH”) to operate a legal assistance program to represent residents at the Spring Grove Hospital Center in Baltimore County. The Spring Grove Hospital Center is a Mental Hygiene Administration facility. The attorney will represent residents in obtaining benefits/entitlements and during later stages of resident grievance processes. The attorney will also be responsible for identifying residents who may have legal problems, but may not be able to request assistance due to their disabilities, and for assisting patients with general civil claims by making referrals to pro bono legal services providers.   Specific Duties:  1.      Screen clients for eligibility and make referrals, as appropriate;   2.      Conduct preliminary and subsequent interviews with potential clients and their legal guardians;   3.      Conduct factual investigations, analysis, and legal research;   4.      Advise clients of results of investigations and research and counsel clients about their options;   5.      Prepare legal documents and correspondence;   6.      Develop case theory and strategy for the representation of clients;   7.      Prepare cases and represent clients in negotiations, hearings, trials and appeals;   8.      Work closely with non-profit organizations, various other community groups and legal providers to conduct community outreach and education, and to support appropriate strategies that benefit the resident population;   9.      Continue professional development and education through attendance at Maryland Legal Aid-sponsored trainings and other programs.    10.   Perform other duties, as assigned within the scope of the essential functions of the position. 
Requirements: 

Qualifications: Attorneys must be in good standing of the Bar of the Court of Appeals of Maryland and must possess at a minimum three (3) years of experience representing individuals with developmental disabilities and dealing with matters related to health care law or civil rights of institutionalized persons in one or more of the following areas: Filing entitlements; Rights Issues; Clinical Panel Administrative Appeals; Conducting client referrals and case reviews; Participating in and conducting informational meetings; and conducting training sessions.  Spanish language proficiency desirable.
