Staff Attorney

Description:

STATEWIDE ADVOCACY SUPPORT
Community Lawyering Project

Maryland Legal Aid announces a temporary full-time staff attorney position available to qualified applicants for the Community Lawyering Project. This new initiative focuses on providing civil legal services to eligible clients in the neighborhoods in which they live through legal clinics at local library branches, places of worship, and other community institutions. Emphasis will be placed on partnering with established local entities to mobilize community resources to holistically address client needs. In addition to providing brief advice and counsel in areas of substantive law within Maryland Legal Aid’s priorities, i.e. housing, consumer, public benefits, and family law, the attorney will provide representation for criminal record expungements, make appropriate referrals for extended representation in other areas of law, and deliver community education presentations. The attorney will be expected to build relationships with grassroots community groups in the communities served to identify needs; where warranted, provide group representation; and raise Maryland Legal Aid’s visibility in the communities served. The attorney will also be involved in the recruitment and training of pro bono attorneys and other volunteers to assist with the delivery of legal services.
Requirements:
Qualifications: Admission to Maryland Bar or another state bar and eligibility and willingness to take the first available Maryland Bar examination. One to three years of legal experience, preferably in the delivery of civil legal services to low-income clients. Able to travel statewide. Flexibility in terms of work hours to include evenings and weekends. Spanish language proficiency desirable.
