Statewide Advocacy Support - Veteran's Project
Location:  Baltimore City, Maryland


Maryland Legal Aid seeks a full-time, temporary lawyer to assist with the administration of the Veterans Telephone Hotline, funded by a Pro Bono Innovation Grant from the Legal Services Corporation.  Maryland is home to 465,000 veterans of the United States Armed Forces, many of whom live at or below the poverty line and struggle to meet their basic living needs. Through the Veterans Telephone Hotline, Maryland Legal Aid provides legal assistance to low-income veterans through brief advice and recruits and trains pro bono lawyers to provide more extensive assistance.   The staff attorney will be responsible for the following:
  • Drafting and overseeing the production of scripts to be used by volunteer attorneys to assist clients;
  • Mentoring and supporting hotline attorneys handling cases, including providing legal support on substantive civil legal issues facing veteran clients;
  • Recruiting, orienting, and training hotline volunteers;
  • Conducting outreach in the veterans community and with the private bar;
  • Developing and maintaining current knowledge of hotline and telephone technology delivery systems;
  • Developing project policies and procedures and project materials;
  • Coordinating program efforts with partners and assisting in building teams and coalitions with other providers to better serve low-income veterans;
  • Providing back-up for the project paralegal in call answering and referral duties;
  • Assisting with the preparation of reports required by the grant and monitoring and evaluation efforts.
  • Maintaining case files pursuant to standards established by Maryland Legal Aid;
  • Becoming certified to practice in Veterans Administration proceedings immediately after hire.

 

Requirements: 

Qualifications: At least two 2 years legal experience as a practicing lawyer in one or more of Maryland Legal Aid’s primary practice areas of housing, public benefits, or family law; Experience in working with pro bono lawyers and volunteers; Demonstrated commitment for working in a public interest law firm setting assisting low-income veterans; Admission to practice in Maryland or eligibility for special authorization for out-of-state attorneys to practice in Maryland; strong preference for individuals with Veterans’ Benefits certification.
