Staff Attorney

Description:

New Hampshire Legal Assistance (NHLA) seeks a dynamic individual for the position of Staff Attorney.

Responsibilities: Represent low-income clients/tenants in housing law cases in court and in administrative hearings, primarily through NHLA’s Fair Housing Project; community outreach and education.  Workload may also include handling cases in other practice areas.

Background: Recognized nationally for our achievements, NHLA has a proud history of aggressive, creative advocacy for low-income and elderly clients in federal and state courts, as well as legislative and administrative forums. Because NHLA does not receive federal Legal Services Corporation (LSC) funding, we are not subject to LSC’s restrictions on lobbying, class action litigation or welfare reform work. NHLA’s resources are primarily focused on housing, health, income benefits, elder law, domestic violence, and public utilities. NHLA operates five branch law offices and a number of statewide projects. NHLA’s Fair Housing Project has been in operation for almost 20 years representing clients who have been victimized by discrimination as well as providing fair housing training and systemic advocacy.

Salary/Benefits: Salary DOE. Excellent benefits, including medical and dental insurance, retirement plan, and law school loan assistance.

NHLA has offices in Berlin, Claremont, Manchester, Concord, and Portsmouth. This particular staff position will most likely be based in the southern tier of the state but is negotiable. Position to start on or after April 1, 2016.

Requirements:

Qualifications: New Hampshire license or willingness to take the next scheduled bar examination, or eligibility for admission on motion. Strong oral and written communication and community outreach skills; a team player who can also work independently. Must be detail-oriented and demonstrate initiative.  Preference is given to those demonstrating a commitment to civil rights, economic justice and working with low-income people.  Knowledge of housing and/or fair housing law a plus.  Bilingual/bicultural is preferred.
