Staff Attorney

Description: 

NLSLA is seeking a Staff Attorney for its Pacoima or El Monte office.  The ideal candidate will be a skillful attorney who can excel in a fast-paced, dynamic anti-poverty law practice and is capable of fiercely advocating on behalf of NLSLA clients in multiple forums. The candidate must have a demonstrated passion and commitment to public interest law and prior experience serving low-income individuals and client groups, with a sensitivity to those in crisis. The ideal candidate must possess strong research and organizational skills; the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing; and well-developed analytical skills.  Of critical importance is that the candidate be self-motivated with the ability to work independently. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish or Mandarin is required.

Salary $52,587 - $83,845 - Commensurate with experience.  Excellent Benefits which include:  choice of medical, dental, vision; life and disability insurance plans; 125 plan; 403(b) with employer contribution, loan reimbursement, bilingual pay supplement, sick and vacation pay, and 13 employer-paid holidays. 

Duties and Responsibilities: Staff Attorneys focus on a broad range of advocacy including litigation, administrative hearings, and/or policy work in substantive legal areas across multiple practice areas affecting low-income individuals and families.  Practice areas include: administrative law, housing & consumer law, employment, immigration, family law, and community development.  Staff Attorneys are also expected to provide outreach and education to community groups; and assist with training and mentorship of paralegal staff.  Assignments will depend upon NLSLA Program priorities. Frequent travel to other NLSLA branch offices, courts, government agencies, shelters and community-based organizations throughout southern California is required.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be licensed and eligible to practice law in California with three or more years of experience in public interest law as well as experience working with low-income organizations and client groups.  Bilingual proficiency in Spanish or Mandarin is required.
