Staff Attorney

Description: 

Availability: Open Immediately.
Extensive travel is required to work at courts, government agencies, shelters, community-based organizations and Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) branch offices.
Salary: Salary $52,587 - $83,845 - Commensurate with experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:Be part of an exciting team of advocates participating in all aspects of a dynamic fast-paced anti-poverty law practice. The staff attorney will be responsible for representing survivors of domestic violence in restraining order hearings and related family law matters as well as immigrant survivors of violence eligible for U Visas, T Visas or VAWAs. The attorney will collaborate closely with domestic violence shelter staff and social services agencies. The attorney will systematize NLSLA’s domestic violence efforts program-wide, including coordinating work with the Department of Public Social Service.

Program Description:NLSLA is one of Los Angeles County's leading public interest law offices and has been the primary legal aid program serving the cities of Burbank and Glendale and the San Fernando and Antelope Valleys for more than 48 years and the city of Pasadena and San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys since 2001. The NLSLA staff of 100+, including 42 lawyers, provides legal assistance to low-income individuals, families and groups in the areas of family law and domestic violence, housing, health care, education, public benefits, economic and job development, immigrant rights, consumer rights and environmental justice. The NLSLA headquarters is located in Glendale, CA with branch offices in Pacoima and El Monte. 

Requirements: 

Qualifications: Candidate must be licensed to practice law in California and must pass a background and security check. Three or more years experience in family law and/or domestic violence is required. Bilingual skills in Spanish, Armenian, Chinese, or Farsi needed. Prior experience serving low-income individuals and client groups, with a sensitivity to those in crisis preferred. Excellent communication (oral, written) skills; well-developed analytical, organizational and writing skills. Self- motivation and the ability to work independently are essential.
