Pro Bono Attorney Training Coordinator

This position is Temporary for 24 months.

The Pro Bono Attorney Training Coordinator’s responsibilities is to play a leadership role in developing and coordinating the California Pro Bono Training Institute with input and direction from the Pro Bono Leadership Team. The Training coordinator will also collaborate with and draw upon the expertise of a statewide network of LSOs to help design and deliver online trainings and resource materials on pro bono topics, taking into account recent innovations in adult learning techniques.  The Training coordinator will also work to increase organization support and strategic development of the CA Pro Bono Training Institute.  

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Work closely with the CA Pro Bono Training Institute leadership team and administrative assistant to develop efficient systems and protocols for the CA Pro Bono Training Institute;
  • Serve as primary staff to coordinate with and get feedback from all CA Pro Bono Training Institute partners and pro bono stakeholders to ensure quality and efficiency of program;
  • Recruit and coordinate the orientation and training of trainers and help develop pro bono trainings;
  • Work with Ca Pro Bono Training Institute administrative assistant to coordinate logistics of webinar trainings, physical trainings, CLE paperwork, and online website;
  • Provide supportive services in response to trainers needs in relation to the trainings;
  • Develop, conduct and manage surveys of trainers, trainees and substantive trainings;
  • Ensure that the CA Pro Bono Training Institute meets its grant deliverables and goals;
  • Write status reports and evaluations for two year project;

 

 QUALIFICATIONS

  • Active membership in the California State Bar.
  • Minimum two to three years’ experience in the practice of law, including broad experience in training, supervising, or mentoring others.
  • Enthusiasm for innovation and expansion of legal services for low-income Californians.
  • Demonstrated experience as a self-starter, with a history of independently managing multiple projects.
  • Understanding the pro bono “systems” in California (i.e., the manner in which private law attorneys are connected to low-income clients).
  • Previous experience working with low-income and/or underserved communities preferred
  • Must possess skills necessary to efficiently plan and implement activities within policies and procedures; maintain positive working relationship; respect rights of others; demonstrate initiative and accept accountability; effectively manage time and communicate and respond to inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with staff at all levels of the Foundation.
  • Excellent writing, analytical, organizational, communication and oral presentation skills; ability to advocate persuasively for the program’s mission. 
  • Computer literate; knowledgeable with Microsoft Office products such as Outlook, Word, Excel.
  • Demonstrated ability to design systems & maintain data information.
  • Knowledge of GoToMeeting and basic web based applications preferred.
  • Should be accessible for meetings before and after normal work hours as necessary.

The Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA, www.LAFLA.org) is the frontline law firm for low-income people in Los Angeles and is currently accepting applications for the position of Pro Bono Attorney Training Coordinator.  LAFLA consists of approximately 135 employees, and over 56 attorneys. The program has an annual operating budget of more than 13 million, and operates six neighborhood offices and four court-based offices.  LAFLA is committed to promoting access to justice, strengthening communities, fighting discrimination, and effecting systemic change through representation, advocacy, and community education. 

 

The Pro Bono Training Institute is a state-wide clearinghouse for online pro bono legal trainings founded by the pro bono directors from the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, OneJustice, and Neighborhood Legal Services-Los Angeles.  Through collaboration with pro bono stakeholders in California, the Institute will develop a statewide online forum of substantive trainings that will provide Legal Services Organizations (LSOs) and pro bono attorneys with easily accessible, highly engaging, and on-demand continuing education courses relevant to pro bono work for low-income clients. The goal of the Pro Bono Training Institute is to create a centralized and more efficient statewide pro bono delivery system and to expand overall pro bono in the state by increasing access to trainings, reducing the creation of duplicative trainings, and facilitating easier recruitment and support of private sector attorneys by providing an online portal to connect LSOs and private attorneys.
