Medical-Legal Partnership Attorney

Legal Aid of Arkansas is a public interest, not-for-profit law firm dedicated to assuring equal access to justice in civil matters for low-income Arkansans.  We are a recognized national leader in the deployment of innovative service models, having led the implementation of Medical-Legal Partnerships in rural community health centers, at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, and with community mental health agencies.  We have also cultivated sustained corporate and pro bono commitments to the MLPs and leveraged the power of MLPs to effect meaningful systemic change for our clients.

We are seeking an attorney fellow to launch a new Medical-Legal Partnership with ARcare, one of the largest primary care providers in Arkansas and a national leader of community health centers.  The preferred candidate will have well-developed project design and implementation skills, as a substantial portion of time will be devoted to developing relationships, educating medical staff and community members about the project, and refining organizational processes to ensure patients/clients receive coordinated medical and legal services. The position will be supported by experienced MLP advocates in the organization.

In addition to the project implementation duties, the attorney fellow will assume standard staff attorney responsibilities, including client representation and outreach. Other duties include integration into a Legal Aid substantive law work group, helpline shifts, and other tasks as assigned.

Job duties will include, but are not limited to:

-        Representing clients in all levels of a case, including negotiations, administrative hearings, trial, and appeal.

-        Conducting community and partner legal education.

-        Drafting legal fact sheets, screeners, and outreach materials.

-        Integration into a Legal Aid workgroup.

-        Conducting intakes and interviews for applicants seeking legal assistance.

Requirements: 

-        Arkansas bar admission, sitting for the February 2016 Arkansas bar exam, or eligibility for reciprocity in Arkansas preferred. 

-        Strong technology skills and familiarity with web based technology preferred.

-        Strong writing and presentation skills.

-        Medical technology/information privacy knowledge a plus.

-        Ability to establish and maintain good community relationships.

-        Strong project management skills.

-        Driver’s license and ability to travel throughout Arkansas.
