Medical-Legal Partnership Attorney

Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands (LAS) has an immediate opening for an attorney in its Nashville office to direct its Middle Tennessee Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) program. The attorney will manage a program that provides legal services to the patients of its medical partners and will handle a general civil practice. Practice areas include domestic violence, housing, mortgage foreclosure, consumer, elder law, health and benefit law, and humanitarian immigration. Practice in other areas of law may be necessary to provide holistic representation. The majority of time and responsibilities will be devoted to the Middle Tennessee Medical-Legal Partnership. A portion of time will be spent to provide legal assistance in other cases that are not referrals from the MLP. Responsibilities include compliance with grants and reporting requirements, development of trainings and materials and coordination with partner institutions. The Legal Aid Society has thirty attorneys in eight offices in Middle and East Tennessee. Its attorneys provide low-income people expert legal assistance at all levels of state and federal court. Its staff includes national authorities in the fields of domestic violence, housing, consumer law, federal income taxation, health advocacy, nonprofit group representation, social security and special education. Requirements: 

Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in public interest law, a commitment to high quality representation and a desire to handle cases that benefit individual clients as well as those impacting their communities. Must have ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form; work with a team and independently; and use Microsoft Office software. Spanish language, license to practice in Tennessee, experience with Legal Files database, some legal experience, residence or intent to reside in the office’s service area and a sense of humor are preferred.
