Managing Attorney

Description: 

Position: BayLegal is looking for a proven leader with the vision and talent to promote our mission and work with staff to ensure the delivery of quality legal assistance consistent with the American Bar Association's Standards for Provision of Civil Legal Aid. Applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to equal access to justice and making a positive difference in the lives of clients and their communities. Managing Attorneys are mentors; prevent and solve problems; seek to improve the office and organization; and motivate staff to effectively advocate before the court, administrative agencies, policy makers, and community forums. This position will supervise a staff of 2-4 full time employees. Responsibilities:

• Proven experience managing people, and ability to teach and practice law on behalf of the poor

• Ability to handle a Domestic Violence/Family Law caseload (60-70% time) while preforming the required responsibilities of the managing attorney (30-40% time)

• Provide leadership, strategic thinking, team building, and taking responsibility for making tough decisions

• Actively participate on BayLegal's senior leadership team

Organization: Bay Area Legal Aid's (BayLegal) mission is to provide high quality legal assistance regardless of a client's location, language, or disability. BayLegal is the largest provider of free civil legal services to low-income residents of the San Francisco Bay Area, with six regional offices serving seven counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara. BayLegal's approximately 100 staff members provide wraparound legal services in housing preservation, domestic violence and sexual assault prevention, economic security, consumer protection, and healthcare access.

Requirements: 

About the Successful Candidate:

• Must be a member of the State Bar of California

• Have a minimum six years of experience as a licensed attorney

• Curious and self-directed with an ability to anticipate what needs to be done

• Strong organizational, language, and communication skills

• Exceptional listener and strategist who can thrive in a collegial environment

• Multi-lingual skills, and a healthy sense of humor are preferred
