LGBT Program Director / Attorney

California Rural Legal Assistance seeks a Full- Time Regular LGBT Program Director/Attorney to work in rural California (office location in Modesto). This management position starts as soon as position is filled. Ideal job for an experienced program director/attorney who wants to lead an effective, dynamic team and wants to make a difference in people's lives. CRLA has been providing free legal services to low income clients in rural California since 1967.

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Programs and New Initiatives, the LGBT Program Director will coordinate and implement CRLA’s statewide LGBT program work. The LGBT Program Manager will implement CRLA’s goal to increase access to justice for low-income lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in rural California, particularly LGBT farm workers.

Responsibilities:

Direct Legal Services

* Coordinate the LGBT Program in the provision of legal assistance and support to the LGBT client population and community-based organizations in CRLA’s service areas.

* Provide direct legal services to LGBT clients on LGBT-related issues

 

Community Education

* Teach and train the LGBT Program Staff to teach local communities and community leaders about LGBT-related issues and law. Outreach efforts must connect with LGBT and non-LGBT audiences.

* Train the LGBT Program Staff on strategies for leadership development among local low-income LGBT residents in CRLA’s services areas.

* Coordinate media relations to increase awareness of LGBT rights in CRLA services areas as well as the challenges faced by low-income LGBT people generally Represent CRLA’s LGBT program at conferences, meetings and forums

 

Administrative

* Maintain statistics and metrics related to statewide efforts and program impact.

* Coordinate Proyecto Poderoso, a collaborative project between CRLA and the National Center for Lesbian Rights in San Francisco.

* Actively collaborate with CRLA Development team to increase program resources, contribute to fundraising strategy, meet with program officers and donors, contribute to proposal development

* Hire, discipline and evaluate LGBT Program staff in consultation with the Deputy Director of Programs and New Initiatives

 

Organizational Capacity Building

* Design, package and deliver training to CRLA staff regarding LGBT cultural competency and LGBT-related legal issues.

* Connect CRLA staff to professional development opportunities that will improve the CRLA’s provision of legal services and advocacy on behalf of LGBT clients.

* Build CRLA’s library of resources on LGBT-related legal services and advocacy.

* Conduct workshops and write articles regarding the provision of legal services to low-income LGBT communities to enhance access to quality LGBT-related legal assistance nationally.

* Facilitate National LGBT Legal Aid Forum, a resource for legal aid attorneys and other legal advocates serving low-income LGBT clients.

SUPERVISOR: Deputy Director of Programs and New Initiatives

SUPERVISES: Community Worker

SALARY: Based on bar admission date - $42,200 base admitted in 2013 to $66,000 base admitted 1995 or before. There is also an additional management bonus, from $4,700 annually admitted in 2013 to $8,100 annually admitted in 1995 or before. Salary is not negotiable. Excellent employer paid benefits package, including pension plan and up to $4500 annual assistance with law school loan repayment for attorneys admitted to the bar after 2000.

Requirements: 

* Admission to the California Bar.

* Minimum one year of management experience, preferably in a legal services environment.

* Familiarity with LGBT related law.

* Understanding and experience in meeting the needs of the LGBT communities, especially farmworker communities in California.

* Experience serving low income clients, especially in the areas of labor, housing, education, civil rights and family security.

* Strong written and verbal communication skills.

* Media relations experience.

* Good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact constructively with diverse populations.

* Experience in supervising staff on projects related to low-income populations.

* Demonstrated experience in tracking and monitoring program outcomes.

* Mediation, negotiation, communication and listening skills.

* Ability to empathize with the client community.

* Computer and data analysis skills

* Bilingual (English and Spanish) strongly preferred.
