Legal/Technology Project Manager

POSITION: Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (MMLA) is seeking a full-time legal/technology project manager for its Legal Services State Support (State Support) group. State Support provides a variety of support services to civil legal services programs in Minnesota and is located in St. Paul. It does not provide direct representation to clients. State Support is funded primarily by the Minnesota Legal Services Coalition, which provides free legal representation throughout Minnesota to people with low incomes, people with disabilities, and seniors. A law degree is preferred but not required for this position.

State Support fosters a coordinated, statewide delivery system by collaborating with all segments of the justice community to expand and enhance civil legal services to low-income Minnesotans. State Support accomplishes these goals through:

• LawHelpMN.org, a comprehensive statewide legal education and referral website, including live navigational assistance through LiveHelp

• ProJusticeMN.org, a website for legal services and pro bono practitioners, law students, and others, including poverty law materials and volunteer opportunities

• New, innovative models of service delivery, including online intake and online advice

• Automated document assembly interviews for pro se litigants and pro bono and legal services attorneys

• Poverty law practice group coordination and maintenance of subject area listservs

• Poverty law trainings, both in person and via webinar

• Plain language community legal education materials, in multiple formats and languages, and

• Connecting and educating the justice community through an online newsletter

RESPONSIBILITIES: This position will work in all areas of State Support. Responsibilities include maintenance and enhancement of a statewide online intake system, developing document assembly interviews, attending community outreach events, maintaining and adding relevant materials to the ProJusticeMN and LawHelpMN websites. The position also includes designing, planning, and organizing 9-12 advocate trainings a year. Training responsibilities include locating trainers on a variety of topics, communicating with trainers as to training objectives and training details, working with other staff on training planning, and attending and moderating trainings. 

Requirements: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Four-year degree required, law degree preferred

• A demonstrated interest in, and commitment to, the needs of low-income/vulnerable clients

• Excellent communication, analytical, and writing skills

o Ability to effectively communicate information to coworkers and individuals outside the organization (trainers, client community, attorneys)

• Strong organization skills and attention to detail

o Ability to develop plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work

o Strong self-direction and follow-through

• Experience working on projects as part of a team

• Strong computer skills and a demonstrated interest in exploring and using technology

o Familiarity with Office Suite

o Comfort learning new computer programs and technology

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Law degree

• Computer programming or web development background, for example:

o Familiarity with HTML or FTP

o Other experience using programming concepts or logic

• Website administration experience, for example:

o Reviewing or updating web content or links

o Troubleshooting webpage problems

• Project management experience, for example:

o Developing and updating project plans

o Coordinating project activities

o Collaborating with and directing project partners

• Experience in poverty law, legal services, or equivalent general practice

• Diverse economic, social, or cultural experiences

• Second language skills a plus
