Legal Aid Hotline Managing Attorney

The AARP Legal Counsel for the Elderly (LCE) provides a wide range of free civil legal services and advocacy to District residents age 60+. LCE helps clients by providing legal advice and information, courtroom advocacy on consumer, foreclosure, real property tax and landlord & tenant issues; assistance with public benefits and other income maintenance, civil protective orders, and identity theft problems; and provides help with estate planning such as drafting wills, powers of attorney, and limited probate matters. 

Manager, Legal Aid Hotline - Attorney

In this role you will oversee the Hotline unit within the Legal Counsel for the Elderly (LCE) office and supervise the staff in providing over-the-phone advice, information, referral and scheduling services to clients.  You will set individual and collective performance goals and objectives aligned with the program, LCE, and AARP needs.  Also, you will recruit and train staff and volunteers to work in the unit.  You will also develop and implement case management procedures, adhering to deadlines and guidelines that facilitate efficient case handling; provide back-up support, technical assistance, client follow-up to the legal hotline and with other LCE projects as needed.  Additionally, you yourself will provide over-the-phone legal advice, information, referrals, self-help materials, guidance, and other legal assistance to clients.  You will refer callers, after evaluation and as appropriate, to free or paying legal services within and outside the LCE and AARP Services, Inc. or to non-legal social services agencies. You will be responsible for submission of periodic reports.   You will troubleshoot intake issues to ensure callers receive client-friendly, prompt, high quality and effective services.  

Requirements: 

 

Requires completion of a Juris Doctorate degree, a member in good standing of the D.C. Bar and 4 years of directly related legal experience; management experience desirable;  or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.
