Executive Director
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: The new Maryland Access to Justice Commission seeks a PART-TIME executive director to work with the Chair and its Board to develop and implement short- and long-term plans to expand access to justice in Maryland. Application Deadline: August 15, 2015.
Duties:
Mission Advancement
1. Works with the Board of Directors to develop and implement both a short-term and
long-term strategic plan.
2. Has responsibility for the Commission’s relationships with key stakeholders,
including the judiciary, legislature, the governor’s office, the Access to Justice Department, the Maryland Legal Services Corporation, legal services programs, potential funders, the Maryland State Bar Association, other local, national, minority and specialty bar associations, clients and client representatives, and local government.
3. Tracks, evaluates, and reports on measures of success developed with the Chair and
Board.
4. Serves as a spokesperson for the organization, in collaboration with the Chair of the
Board.
Financial Sustainability
5. Working with the Board, leads the effort to raise funds to support the Commission
from all potential sources, including law firms, the Bench, government, foundations, corporate and individual donors.
6. Supports the Chair and Board in its related fundraising efforts.
7. Develops the annual budget, subject to approval by the Board.
8. Manages the organization’s finances, ensuring compliance with financial policies, and
provides quarterly financial reports to the Chair and the Board.
Governance
9. Provides accurate and timely information to the Chair and Board on the Commission’s
projects and finances.
10. Advises the Board regarding current and national trends, problems and opportunities
that are important to the Commission’s mission and operations.
11. Serves as a voting member of the Board of Directors.
Operations
12. Supervises and helps to recruit qualified staff, volunteers and interns, and helps to
develop and administer an effective human resources system that includes position descriptions, performance standards, performance appraisals and a fair compensation system.
13. Ensures that the organization is in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
Qualifications:
1. A J.D., with law practice experience strongly preferred.
2. Five years of relevant experience (more preferred), including as a leader in legal
services, pro bono or other relevant positions.
3. Knowledge and experience in the delivery of legal services, preferably in both
traditional and experimental forms, to low- and moderate-income people.
4. Demonstrated leadership and management skills.
5. Experience and strong skills in fundraising, fiscal management, and budgeting.
6. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
7. Strong interpersonal and political skills, including the ability to work constructively
with diverse constituent groups.
8. Strong professional reputation.
9. Demonstrated vision and creativity.
10. Ability to work independently on multiple tasks.
11. Experience with, or demonstrated capacity for, research and policy analysis including at
national and State levels.
12. Ability to adapt to changed circumstances and adversity.
Salary and Office: Up to $60,000 (three days a week), based on qualifications. Benefits negotiable. The ED’s office will be located at the University of Baltimore School of Law in Baltimore, however, this is not an academic position.
