Executive Director

Description:

Founded in 1973, LACLJ provides free legal representation, education and advocacy to low-income families in Los Angeles County. LACLJ’s mission is to fight for the rights of vulnerable families and advocate for a more just legal system. LACLJ’s holistic services model – offering personalized legal representation, education, and supportive services – focuses on ensuring safety and success beyond the courtroom. Building on our experience with these individual families, we advocate for widespread change to improve the lives of low-income families in California.

LACLJ envisions a strong community where families are safe, stable and free from injustice.  Guided by our strategic plan, we have four innovative programs designed to promote our vision: Domestic Violence, Teen Legal Advocacy (Teen/LA), Immigration, and Access to Justice.

Under the leadership of its prior Executive Director, LACLJ doubled its budget and staff and achieved program and funding stability.  LACLJ is looking for an Executive Director (ED) who can continue to build LACLJ’s capacity, ensure long-term sustainability, and increase its impact.  The ED will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for executing LACLJ’s mission, including supervising its staff, programs, expansion, and rebranding effort. S/he will develop deep knowledge of core programs, operations, and business plans.  The ED will supervise a budget of $2.3 million and a staff of 26 attorneys, advocates, and social workers.

Key responsibilities include:

• Ensure that LACLJ is a stable and sustainable organization with a diverse fundraising portfolio, including substantial outreach, networking and development activities.

• Develop a communications strategy to promote LACLJ as a superior nonprofit agency through a cohesive brand and communications plan, including implementing LACLJ’s rebranding.

• Guarantee that LACLJ programs provide the highest quality of service and demonstrate positive impact, including continued development of metrics to assess the positive impact that LACLJ delivers.

• Direct the ongoing growth of LACLJ’s administrative systems, including ultimate responsibility for supervising all staff and interacting with the Board of Directors.

Requirements:

The ED must be passionate about LACLJ’s mission and believe in the strategic plan.  Concrete demonstrable experience and other qualifications include:

• Advanced degree, JD, MBA (nonprofit) or MSW preferred.

• Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation.

• Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a      wide range of stakeholders and cultures.

• Experience working in a legal setting.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator    with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.

 • Track record of effectively leading and scaling a performance- and outcomes-based   organization and staff; ability to point to specific examples of having developed and      operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth.

• Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people; ability to speak and understand Spanish is a plus.
