Director of Legal Education

Description: 

Legal Services NYC (LSNYC) fights poverty and seeks racial, social and economic justice for low-income residents of New York City. For almost 50 years, we have challenged the systemic injustices that trap people in poverty and provided legal services that help our clients meet their most basic needs. As the largest civil legal services provider in the country, LSNYC combines a citywide reach with deep roots in the communities we serve. Our staff of 325 people is located in offices in all five boroughs. While our specialized practice units deliver expert, high-quality legal services, all of our offices collaborate with public-interest providers, pro bono attorneys, courts, community and client-run organizations, and government agencies to bring about lasting and effective change. We are seeking a full-time Director of Legal Education. The Director will manage LSNYC’s Learning Center, which is the largest poverty law Continuing Legal Education program in the country. The Learning Center provides a wide array of substantive, skills, ethics and professional practice courses to our own staff, the larger public interest community, and the pro bono bar. The courses are taught by experienced instructors, including Legal Services NYC’s experts, private lawyers, law school professors and leading lawyers from the public interest community. Responsibilities The Director will manage all aspects of the Learning Center, including developing and coordinating course offerings, supervising staff and evaluating results. The Director will develop resources to help LSNYC’s advocacy staff build community legal education skills and materials. The Director will also support the efforts of the Human Resources Department to develop training for LSNYC’s staff members who are not lawyers.

Requirements: 

Applicants must have the following qualifications: • J.D. from an accredited law school • At least three years of experience in practicing law • Experience in planning and conducting legal education • Ability to supervise staff and work in a team • Strong organizational skills • Excellent oral and written communication skills • A demonstrated passion for social justice and commitment to low income people and communities In addition, the following qualifications are strongly preferred: • A degree or certificate in Education • Expertise in the field of adult learning • Familiarity with training-related technology (webinars, etc)
