The National Center for Youth Law (NCYL) (www.youthlaw.org) is a non-profit organization that for over four decades has worked nationally to ensure low-income children have the resources, support, and opportunities they need for healthy and productive lives. NCYL’s successes have led the organization to double in size over the past five years, with a current annual budget of over $5 million and a staff of 40 in multiple sites.

 

Position (to be based in Oakland, California)

 

NCYL seeks a Director of Finance and Operations, responsible for managing NCYL’s finances; overseeing NCYL’s development, human resources, and administrative functions; and leading significant new operations projects, including major technology initiatives.

 

A new position at NCYL, we are looking for someone to help shape and define this role. We are looking for an enterprising, highly competent, applicant who is committed to working in the service of at-risk children both as our finance and operations lead.  Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Managing NCYL’s finances, including ensuring all practices comply with state and local regulations; working with our external accountant; managing cash flow; managing investments; leading the audit process; ensuring all bills and invoices are paid.
  • Working with the Executive Director to develop a short and long-term financial strategy that supports the organization; providing financial analysis of major organizational decisions.
  • Developing and managing annual budgets and forecasting.
  • Developing systems and tools that allow NCYL senior staff to better manage their teams.
  • Designing and implementing new finance and operations processes and technologies.
  • Leading the 6 person Operations team, which includes administrative staff, development staff, and HR staff, and integrating all operations processes and infrastructure such that they support each other and the organization.
  • Serving as a member of NCYL’s management team and as a thought partner to the Executive Director.
  • Leading new infrastructure projects, such as locating new facilities; developing new Board committees; and designing and implementing new technologies in support of staff.

 

 

Salary and Benefits

 

This is a full-time position in Oakland, California with flexible hours. Salary is comparable to similar organizations in the Bay Area, with a range of $75,000 to $125,000 annually depending on qualifications. NCYL provides health, dental, life, short and long-term disability insurance, vacation benefits, and an employer contribution to a retirement plan.

  • Willingness to be versatile and flexible in a deadline-driven environment

 

Desired Qualifications

 

  • Specific interest in education, child welfare, juvenile justice, and health care reform
  • Experience leading technology projects
  • Familiarity with non-profit finances
  • Experience with accounting software

 

Education and Experience

 

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in accounting, finance, business, non-profit management or a related field and/or a minimum of 7 years of directly related experience managing financial outcomes in a business environment.
