The Opportunity:

Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP) is seeking a talented and committed finance professional to help further its mission of promoting justice by defending and advancing the rights of immigrants.  The organization is well-positioned for substantial growth and needs an experienced leader who can provide strong oversight of finance matters and ensure compliance with funder requirements.  The position reports to and works closely with the Executive Director (ED) and is part of NWIRP’s management team.  We are looking for an individual who relishes both the technical aspects of accounting and finance and who is a strong and strategic manager.

NWIRP Overview:

Founded in 1984, NWIRP is a nationally-recognized legal services organization dedicated to defending and advancing the rights of immigrants. Each year, NWIRP provides direct legal assistance in immigration matters to thousands of people from over 150 countries, speaking over 50 different languages. NWIRP also works toward systemic change through impact litigation, public policy work, and community education.  In 2016, NWIRP is projected to have a staff of approximately 52 FTE’s and an annual budget of approximately $4.6 million, and serves the community through four offices in Washington State.  More information about NWIRP is available at www.nwirp.org.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

Financial Management

·         Handle and supervise all aspects of financial operations, including payroll, receipts, disbursements, cash management and equipment records; maintain computerized ledgers and journals

·         Maintain financial management reporting system, including project and grants accounting

·         Staff the Board of Director’s Finance Committee; provide accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements to the Executive Director (ED), the Committee and the Board of Directors; keep the ED appraised of key financial matters

·         Coordinate the annual audit and form 990 processes; prepare supporting information for the audit; liaise with external auditors, banks and financial institutions

·         Oversee and manage annual budget planning and financial forecasting process in conjunction with the ED

·         Prepare financial reports to meet state, local and federal government requirements

·         Oversee investments, maintain fiscal and investment policies and procedures, manage cash flow and forecasting

·         Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices; keep current and improve the overall policy and procedural manual for financial management

·         Archive financial records as scheduled

Grant and Contract Management

·         Implement and manage a robust grant and contract management system overseeing all NWIRP grant and contract execution, implementation and close-out processes

·         Develop budgets for new grant and contract requests and monitor expenditures of on-going grants and contracts

Finance Department and Organization Functions

·         Supervise the bookkeeper, who handles account payables, certain payroll functions and other duties

·         In coordination with the Administrative Director, manage the employee benefits programs and maintain vacation and sick leave records

·         Maintain and manage liability and professional insurance coverage for NWIRP

·         Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director

 

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time position.   Salary will be based on experience and in accordance with NWIRP’s salary scales.  Includes a generous benefits package. 

 

Requirements: 

Ideal Skills and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights and willingness to support NWIRP’s mission, vision and values
  • Minimum of a B.A in accounting, ideally with a CPA, MBA or related degree
  • Eight or more years of hands-on professional accounting experience
  • Demonstrated success in a senior level financial and accounting management position, preferably with 501(c)(3) non-profits, responsible for the quality and content of financial data, reporting and audit coordination
  • Experience with financial reporting for government funding sources strongly preferred
  • A successful track record in analysis and problem solving to enable sound decision making
  • Excellent communication skills to explain financial concepts, prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Sophisticated proficiency in use of Excel and computerized accounting software (experience with Quickbooks a plus)
  • Knowledge of internal controls
  • Ability to work under pressure and to set and change priorities according to deadline requirements
