Director of Communications

Description: 

The National Health Law Program (NHeLP) is seeking a dynamic and creative Director of Communications to work with the executive team to develop and implement both long and short term communications and media strategies. The Director of Communications will develop and implement strategies and tactics, including digital media, to broaden NHeLP’s reach to its key audiences, which include federal and state advocates and policymakers, funders, media, and national and state partner organizations. The Director of Communications will be located in the D.C. office. A junior staff person will support the Director. The Director’s specific duties will include:

  • Overall: Develop and implement a plan that integrates all aspects of NHeLP’s communications.  The plan will include strategic goals, message development, identifying target audiences, strategies for reaching those audiences, as well as metrics for assessing success.
     
  • Message Development: The Director will work with staff to provide input on how best to frame NHeLP’s issues to their audiences.
     
  • Publications: The Director will work with staff to manage the production and dissemination of both print and electronic based publications.
     
  • Media Relations:  The Director will develop and execute a strategic media relations plan.  The Director will work closely with the nation’s leading print and broadcast reporters, columnists, editorial writers, and bloggers in promoting NHeLP’s work.  Working with the Executive Director and staff, the Director will assist in the development of opinion editorials and other written communications in order to place them in traditional and digital media outlets.
     
  • Social Media:  The Director will oversee daily management of current social media accounts, e.g., Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. He/she will also provide ongoing recommendations on best practices to improve the content and timeliness of communications with NHeLP’s followers.
     
  • Website Management:  The Director will oversee management and updates of website content and functionality.
     
  • Media Training: The Director will conduct introductory media training with new and less experienced staff as a standard onboarding protocol. He/she will also conduct advanced media training with current staff.
     
  • Content Creation:  The Director will be responsible for developing and overseeing content creation of collateral materials to support all communications functions, including media relations, social media, and development support.
     
  • Management Team:  The Director will be part of the senior management team and will participate in regular management team meetings.

Requirements: 

The successful candidate will have 7-10 years of experience developing and implementing strategic communications plans that include significant substantive content and also focus on influencing national and state public policy debates. The successful candidate will have previous experience in non-profit advocacy, corporate or trade association communications, public affairs or public relations agency work, or political communications.
