Director of Advocacy

Description:

Make a Difference in the Lives of Others

Legal Aid of Western Ohio seeks a creative, energetic, and outstanding leader to serve as its Director of Advocacy.  This is a unique and exciting leadership opportunity for an experienced attorney and effective advocate committed to equal justice.

The Director of Advocacy position is open at a critical moment in LAWO’s efforts to bring justice to its clients and client communities. LAWO is in the midst of a strategic plan that includes using broad-based advocacy efforts to address critical client needs and focused advocacy to achieve long-lasting results. The Director of Advocacy will lead a team of 29 attorneys to implement LAWO’s strategic advocacy initiatives in the areas of education, housing and community economic development, government benefits and health care, access to justice, and the rights of agricultural worker and survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking.

In addition to guiding the work of attorneys and several practice groups, the Director of Advocacy has major management responsibilities within the firm and works closely with other organizations and partners involved in providing legal assistance to our client communities. LAWO receives funds from the Legal Services Corporation and many other funders. We work in close collaboration with a non-LSC funded non-profit law firm, Advocates for Basic Legal Equality (ABLE). The Director of Advocacy will lead those collaborative efforts for LAWO.

A successful applicant must be a member of the Ohio Bar, or be able to be admitted upon motion or temporary certification, have at least seven years of litigation and trial experience, and possess excellent legal, administrative, and communications skills. The Director of Advocacy must have a strong commitment to securing justice for disadvantaged individuals and communities and working in a collaborative environment. Experience in legal services, federal litigation, and working with community groups highly preferred.

The salary range for this position is $75,000 to $100,000 DOE.

More information on LAWO and the attractive Toledo area

LAWO advocates on behalf of vulnerable individuals and communities in 32 counties in Western Ohio. The area includes two medium size cities (Toledo and Dayton), numerous smaller communities, and rural areas. LAWO also represents agricultural workers throughout Ohio. LAWO is a non-profit law firm that provides high quality legal assistance in civil matters to low-income individuals and groups.

Toledo is a great place to live, full of people who thought they would come for a year or two and end up staying for a lifetime because they fall in love with the area. Toledo is a diverse community located in Northwest Ohio, bordering Lake Erie just south of Detroit and Ann Arbor, Michigan. More than 600,000 persons reside in the Toledo metropolitan area. The area has many challenges, but is small enough that advocates can effectively influence action on issues affecting our client communities. The Toledo area has a world-class art museum, a symphony orchestra, opera, ballet, and theater groups, one of the best amusement parks in the country (Cedar Point), a nationally recognized zoo, and a wide variety of neighborhoods and ethnic festivals. Outdoor recreation and sports opportunities include an extensive Metroparks system and easy access to lakes and rivers. Toledo is also home to the Mud Hens Triple A minor league baseball team and a minor league hockey team. Cleveland, Ann Arbor, and Detroit lie within a one to two hour drive; Chicago and Columbus are 3 to 4 hours away. Exceptional educational opportunities are also available. There are 33 schools of higher education within 50 miles of Toledo. The region has all the attributes of a large cosmopolitan area, while retaining the advantages of small-town living.
